Time of death: season five, as the doctors of New Amsterdam will no longer be residents of NBC's schedule. The medical drama will end its run after five seasons on the air during the upcoming 2022-23 TV season, the network has announced today. New Amsterdam debuted in 2018 with strong ratings before gradually looking less impressive in its cushy post-This Is Us time slot. The show remained an easy renewal for NBC, who picked the show up for a second season relatively quickly. During that second season, NBC gave the series a hefty three-season pickup, granting the series a third, fourth and fifth season. That fifth season, now confirmed to be its last, will run for thirteen episodes - the shortest season of the show. The decision to end the series comes amid a continued ratings drop, with the show averaging a 0.37 in the 18-49 demo during its current fourth season - the lowest of any returning NBC drama this season outside of The Blacklist. Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Simms and Tyler Labine lead the cast of the show.
