The Charleston Capitols have just won a game and are moving onto the Championship Series. The Capitols are in the clubhouse celebrating. Champagne is being sprayed all over the room while reporters try to flag down people to interview. One eventually finds LEWIS.
REPORTER
Coach, you’ve had a great game, great season, and now you’ve led the Capitols back to the Championship Series. How does it feel?
LEWIS
Good.
REPORTER
Did you ever expect that you’d be back in the Championship Series?
LEWIS
I thought there’d be a chance. But there was also a chance we wouldn’t.
REPORTER
What was going through your mind in that last inning?
LEWIS
I forgot if I shut off my oven. Then I remembered I haven’t used my oven in over a week so if my house is in flames right now, it’s not because of me.
REPORTER
Okay…uh…is there anyone you’d like to thank?
LEWIS
Sure.
REPORTER
Alright nice talking to you Coach.
LEWIS walks away. RAY and BEN run after him with the remaining water and pour it on him.
LEWIS
I’m soaked!
BEN
We were gonna do it on someone else but they didn’t want us to.
LEWIS
You asked a teammate but not your manager?
BEN
Yep.
LEWIS
Well you’re lucky I like water.
CARTER runs over to LEWIS.
CARTER
WE WON THE GAME!!!!!!!!
LEWIS
You didn’t play in it.
CARTER
There’s always the Championship Series!
The same REPORTER from before flags down LEWIS again.
REPORTER
Coach, you’re trending all over social media for your answers earlier. How did it feel to be interviewed? Also, what was going through your mind during that interview? And finally, did you ever expect to get a follow-up interview?
LEWIS
Good Lord. It’s times like now that make me happy to remember I’m retiring at the end of the season.
The room becomes quiet. There is a long silence.
REPORTER
Back to you.
The REPORTER leaves.
CARTER
Lewis…you’re retiring? How come you never told anyone?
LEWIS
I didn’t want to make it all about me. This is about winning a Championship Series! Now let’s celebrate and get ready to beat whoever it is we’re gonna play!
RAY
Lewis this is huge news, what didn’t you tell us?!
LEWIS
Eh, I was planning on telling you at one point or another. The timing just never seemed right.
A voice shouts from the back: CAN WE GET BACK TO PARTYING NOW?
LEWIS
Uh huh! Party now and beat the—uh, other team later!
BEN
Who is the other team anyways?
LEWIS
Not decided yet. Either gonna be the Primitives or the—
BEN
Alright, so it’s a Capitols versus Primitives rematch. Bring it on.
After some more champagne celebrations, the Capitols head home.
