DANIEL (Hispanic, 21) sits with his friends JOEL (White, 21) and TYLER (Asian, 21) in the university library. Joel and Tyler are having a conversation. Daniel is staring at BAILEY (White, 21). Bailey is a blonde sorority girl and is sitting and talking with her sorority sisters at another table in the library.
Daniel is looking at Bailey longingly. Bailey sees Daniel and smiles at him.
JOEL
Dan... Dan... Dan!
Daniel focuses back on his friends sitting in front of him.
DANIEL
What?
JOEL
What do you think?
DANIEL
Think about what?
JOEL
Who’s stronger, Hulk or Thor?
DANIEL
Huh?
TYLER
Thor is obviously the strongest.
JOEL
No, Hulk is. His name says it all.
TYLER
Thor is a literal god and he has a hammer that only he can lift up.
JOEL
Dan. Settle this.
Daniel is still looking at Bailey. Joel looks in the same direction as Daniel and sees that he is looking at Bailey.
JOEL
Dude, when are you going to finally ask her out?
DANIEL
Soon.
TYLER
That’s what he said last time. Three weeks ago.
DANIEL
I’m going to do it.
JOEL
Look, dude, just do it. It’s easy, you just go up to her and ask her out.
DANIEL
It’s not that easy.
JOEL
Sure it is.
TYLER
Dan’s right, it’s always super easy in the movies.
JOEL
If you won’t ask her out then I will.
Joel gets up. Daniel grabs him by the shoulder and drags him back down.
DANIEL
Alright alright fine, I’ll do it.
Daniel gets up. He takes a deep breath and begins walking over to Bailey. When Daniel is halfway towards Bailey, her boyfriend GARY appears at her table and kisses her. Daniel turns around discreetly and returns to his table. He sits down. Joel pats his shoulder.
JOEL
There there buddy. She didn’t say no.
TYLER
She didn’t say anything.
Joel gives Tyler a glaring look.
TYLER
Which means there's still hope.
DANIEL
I’m going to die alone.
JOEL
Maybe. Unless you get a pet, like a goldfish. You know, something that won’t miss you when you’re gone.
DANIEL
(Sarcastically)
Thanks.
JOEL
No problem.
TYLER
Look on the bright side man, now that you know she has a boyfriend, you can move on.
JOEL
He’s right.
DANIEL
Yeah, I guess.
JOEL
Tell you what dude, how about we throw a little party. Buy some snacks, beer, maybe watch some Tarantino movies.
DANIEL
I don’t know.
JOEL
Come on, you just had your heart torn out of your chest and stomped on. You need this.
Daniel contemplates.
DANIEL
Ok.
JOEL
Yes! Ok, I’ll handle the beer and snacks. Tyler, you get the movie.
TYLER
Got it.
INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT
Joel lays out snacks and beer on a table in the living room. Daniel enters the living room.
DANIEL
Guess who’s in town?
JOEL
Who?
DANIEL
Greg.
JOEL
Greg? I thought he was still at sea.
DANIEL
He’s on leave right now, just landed back in town this morning.
JOEL
Yes! The way Greg drinks, this party just got a whole lot better.
Tyler enters the apartment carrying a DVD.
TYLER
Hey, I got the movie.
Tyler hands the DVD to Joel. It is a documentary on whales.
JOEL
What the hell is this?
TYLER
The movie.
JOEL
I said Tarantino, not whatever this is.
TYLER
This is a documentary on whales. It’s really good. Keanu Reeves narrates it.
JOEL
Don’t get me wrong, I love Keanu, but I also love seeing Uma Thurman slicing people's arms off, Jamie Foxx killing racist white men, and Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio killing members of the Manson family.
There is a knock at the door. Daniel goes to answer it. Standing in the doorway is GREG (White, 21).
GREG
Sup.
DANIEL
What’s up man?
Greg and Daniel hug.
GREG
I just spent four months in a submarine, so nothing much.
Joel walks up to Greg. The two smile at each other and hug.
JOEL
It’s nice to have someone here who knows how to party.
TYLER
Hey Greg.
GREG
Tyler, what’s up man?.
Greg and Tyler hug.
GREG
So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get this party started.
Joel tosses Greg a beer. Greg catches it.
JOEL
Ask and you shall receive.
Throughout the night, the four boys drink and eat. They talk and laugh. They are having a good time. Daniel appears to be feeling better.
The four boys sit on the couch and watch the whale documentary. The voice of Keanu Reeves is narrating.
THE VOICE OF KEANU REEVES
Despite being the largest mammal on Earth, the blue whale is actually a gentle giant.
JOEL
This. Is. So. Boring.
TYLER
It’s educational.
JOEL
So are Tarantino movies.
DANIEL
How?
JOEL
I know that if someone ever wrongs me, all I have to do is put on a yellow jumpsuit, get a katana, and kill anyone that gets in my way on my quest for revenge.
DANIEL
Uh-huh.
TYLER
What do you think Greg?
GREG
I’m with Joel. After spending four months underwater, watching a documentary set underwater is the last thing I want to see.
Daniel gets up and gathers up trash and puts it in a trash bag. He exits the apartment.
EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY
Daniel walks to the dumpster and throws away the trash. Across the street, is a house having a party. There are multiple students/partygoers. Daniel begins to head back to his apartment but stops. Across the street, is Bailey and Gary. Gary’s car is parked in the street. The couple is in the middle of an argument. Gary gets in his car and drives away leaving Bailey alone on the sidewalk. Daniel begins walking towards her. Bailey sees Daniel and smiles.
Suddenly, the ground shakes. Daniel stops in his tracks. The sky turns a bright green. The surrounding buildings begin to crumble/partially disappear. Bolts of green lightning zap people causing them to disappear. Whatever the green bolts touch, disappears. Bailey and the other partygoers scatter. They are screaming and panicking. Daniel is frozen. A partygoer near him is zapped and is gone. Daniel begins to run back to the apartment dodging green bolts of lightning.
INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT
In the apartment, Joel, Greg, and Tyler are on the floor. The apartment is shaking. The TV has fallen over and the kitchen has been destroyed. Daniel enters the apartment.
JOEL
Oh man, I am way too drunk for this.
TYLER
What the fuck is happening!
DANIEL
I- I don’t know. The sky just turned green and-
GREG
What?
Daniel goes to the window and pulls back the curtains revealing the green sky and the destruction. Joel, Greg, and Tyler go over to the window and look out.
TYLER
Holy shit.
There is a flash of green light and an energy surge expands from the horizon and hits the apartment knocking the boys to the floor. They are unconscious.
THE NEXT MORNING
The four boys are still unconscious. The apartment is a mess. It is covered in dust and rubble. Daniel wakes up. He is bruised and has cuts and scrapes on his face and hands. He stands up and looks around. He walks over to where the window once was. Now, it is a giant hole in the wall. Daniel looks out the hole. The landscape is a wasteland. Buildings are destroyed or are partially gone. Small fires burn here and there. The green sky is gone. There is no person in sight.
Joel, Tyler, and Greg wake up. They are also covered in cuts and bruises. They notice the state of the apartment.
GREG
Fuck, did we really party that hard?
The three see Daniel standing at the hole.
They get up and join Daniel. Cars are destroyed and crashed into each other. Trees have fallen over and collapsed onto the street. In the distance, the city is in ruins. Buildings partially destroyed and on fire.
JOEL
What in the world?
