FRESHMEN
WRITTEN BY WILLIAM FRY
Open in a
college dorm. Our character ANDREW who is white and dressed in a red t-shirt
and jeans stands alone in the middle of his dorm room. He looks around and then
looks at his boxes. He rolls his sleeves up and starts grabbing stuff out of
the boxes. He starts putting up posters and setting up his desk.
ANDREW VOICEOVER
My name is
Andrew Evans and as you can probably guess, I’m a freshman in college. I
graduated high school with three As and two Bs, so you could say I’m a pretty
decent student. I’m majoring in business. Why? Well to tell you the truth, I
don’t really know what I want to do. I considered being a doctor but they’re in
school for like a thousand years. Also, I’m good with just watching Grey’s
Anatomy, not living it. People say college is a time to reinvent oneself. A
clean slate. An opportunity to escape whatever reputation you had in high
school. For me...that’s a good thing.
Flashback of
Andrew in high school walking down the hall. The fly of his shorts is down. He
does not know and people are whispering and laughing. He looks around at the
people laughing at him confused. He looks down and realizes his fly is down. He
zips it and runs off clearly embarrassed.
Cut back to
the dorm. As Andrew hangs up a poster, his roommate EDISON walks in carrying a
box and a backpack. Edison is hispanic, wearing a blue shirt and jeans.
EDISON
Is this 305?
ANDREW
Yeah.
ANDREW VOICEOVER
That’s my
roommate Edison. He’s what you would call a ladies man. Well that’s the PG-13
rated description of him. He’s also a business major. His dream is to invent
one big thing that will earn him enough money for the rest of his life.
EDISON
I’m Edison.
You must be Andrew.
ANDREW
Yeah. Nice to
meet you dude.
Edison sets
his box on his bed.
Andrew and
Edison shake hands.
EDISON
Right back at
you.
They stand in
awkward silence.
EDISON
I feel like
we're gonna be good friends.
Andrew laughs.
EDISON
You going to
the party tonight?
ANDREW
What party?
EDISON
Sigma Phi
Alpha’s throwing a welcome party for all freshmen.
ANDREW
I have to
unpack and get ready for tomorrow-
EDISON
Dude this is
the chance to put yourself out there. With the cool guys, the jocks, and the
professors who try really hard to be like us by attending parties. Also, you
know who’s gonna be at the party?
ANDREW
Who?
EDISON
Freshmen girls
who have just broken up with their high school boyfriends.
Before Andrew
can respond, Sarah appears at their doorway. She is white dressed in a white
tank top and shorts. Her blonde hair is down. Andrew and Edison stare at her.
SARAH
Hey, y’all
know where the dining hall is?
Andrew and
Edison don’t answer.
SARAH
Hello?
ANDREW VOICEOVER
Man she’s
beautiful. I should ask her out. What better way to start college than with a
college girlfriend.
ANDREW
The student
union.
SARAH
Thanks. I’m
Sarah by the way.
ANDREW
Andrew.
EDISON
Edison.
SARAH
Cool.
Sarah enters
the room.
SARAH
So what’s your
major?
ANDREW
Business. You?
SARAH
Nursing.
ANDREW
Cool.
SARAH
So what are y'all talking about?
EDISON
I'm trying to
convince Andrew to go the welcome party that Sigma Phi Alpha is throwing but he
has to “unpack.”
SARAH
Ooh can I go
with y’all? My roommate’s going with her boyfriend and you two are actually the
closest things to friends I have here.
EDISON
Well that
depends if we're going.
ANDREW
Yes. Yes we
are.
SARAH
Awesome.
Cut to the
outside of the Sigma Phi Alpha House. It is surrounded by cops.
EDISON
(To a frat guy)
What happened?
FRAT GUY
Some freshmen
reported us to campus police.
The frat guy
leaves.
EDISON
Dammit!
Tonight was suppose to be fun! Before the next four boring years of our lives
start.
SARAH
Sorry guys.
Andrew looks
at Sarah.
ANDREW
We can eat at
the student union.
SARAH
Sounds great.
EDISON
Fine.
Whatever.
They begin
walking towards the union.
FRAT GUY
Hey everyone!
The party’s back on at Kappa Alpha Si!.
EDISON
Hell yes! See
yeah!
Edison runs
off.
Cut to Andrew
and Sarah sitting in the student union. Each of them has a tray of food.
SARAH
So why
business?
ANDREW
I don't know.
It just seemed like something easy. Something basic. Why nursing?
SARAH
I want to help
people.
ANDREW
That's a
better reason than mine.
Sarah Laughs.
ANDREW VOICEOVER
Ask her out.
She's totally into you.
Andrew opens
his mouth and hesitates.
ANDREW
Who knew
college food could taste so good, right?
Andrew and
Sarah Laugh.
ANDREW VOICEOVER
Not now. But
soon.
THE NEXT DAY -
MORNING
INT. DORM -
DAY
Andrew is in
bed. He wakes up and stretches.
ANDREW VOICEOVER
Ahhhhh first
day of classes. Time to kick this year off to a great start... OH MY GOSH I
SLEPT THROUGH MY ALARM!
Andrew jumps
out of bed, throws on some clothes, stuffs his backpack, and runs out of his
dorm.
Andrew runs
across campus dodging multiple obstacles. He runs down the halls of a building
and enters a classroom. He looks at his watch with one minute to spare.
INT. HISTORY
CLASSROOM - DAY
Most of the
seats are taken. Andrew sees that a seat by Sarah is free. He walks over to
her.
ANDREW
Hey.
SARAH
Hey.
Andrew sits
down.
SARAH
What happened
to you?
ANDREW
I slept
through my alarm. I had to run.
SARAH
Oh.
The classroom
door slams open. PROFESSOR SIMMONS walks in and sets his briefcase on the
teacher’s desk. He looks at the students with a stern uncaring look.
PROFESSOR SIMMONS
My name is
Professor Simmons. This is U.S. History. Open your books and read chapter one.
Professor
Simmons sits at the teacher’s desk and starts reading a mystery novel. The
students in the class look at each other confused.
ANDREW
Ummm
Professor.
PROFESSOR SIMMONS
Yes freshman?
ANDREW
Aren’t you
gonna lecture us.
PROFESSOR SIMMONS
You want me to
lecture you? Ok I’ll lecture you.
Professor
Simmons stands up.
PROFESSOR SIMMONS
You are all
taking this class because you have to not because you want to but because the
state says so. For half of you, this class probably doesn’t even apply to your
major. Also, this is my last semester before I get to retire and spend the rest
of my days reading John Grisham. So here’s how this class is gonna work. All
you have to do is read the chapter. I won’t give you quizzes, tests, or
homework. If you finish the chapter then guess what… you get a study hall.
How’s that for a lecture?
Professor Simmons
sits down and continues reading his book.
ANDREW VOICEOVER
It’s gonna be
a long semester.
