ABC Schedule Analysis

The Ratings Junkie Monday, August 10, 2015
Note: This article has been edited to adjust to changes made in the schedule since its original publishing in May.

Overview

If there is any network schedule so far that has played it safe, it was this one. For months, I have been trying to think of how ABC could optimize their comedy success, and which comedy would be forced to leave the night to do so. Turns out, none of them did, with the entire Wednesday lineup staying intact. Although unexpected to me, it was a pleasant surprise given that The Middle is my favorite TV series, and I could not have asked for a better pairing by ABC than The Middle and The Goldbergs. Stability is the goal here, and it appears that this is because they have great confidence in The Muppets. It is being asked to self-start Tuesdays and give a boost to midseason entry Fresh Off The Boat. When The Muppets leaves the air midseason, Fresh is expected to anchor the hour once again, showing that ABC has confidence in both The Muppets and its power as a lead-in. Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays also stayed the same, with the exception of Dr. Ken on at 8:30 on Fridays instead of Cristela. The only real news was Sunday: unexpectedly a Nashville-less night that will be led by Once Upon A Time, followed by new entries Oil and Of Kings and Prophets Blood & Oil and Quantico.

Analysis

Monday
On March 9, 2009, ABC premiered Castle. Although a bubble show at first, it has passed the test of time and has become a very steady performer for the network—that is, until this season, when ratings have fallen down to very mediocre levels at best. However, Castle is now entering its eight season airing behind Dancing with the Stars on Mondays. Some say it has been under this protection for way too long, while others see stability as the better option. ABC kept Castle in its timeslot at the expense that two new dramas in a row will have to air on Sundays, which historically means that either one or none will be successful.

Tuesday
ABC's Tuesday schedule has improved dramatically from the last two seasons. In 2013-2014, SHIELD underwhelmed to the point where the underrated Trophy Wife did not feel any boost, leading into an even more abysmal rating for the many shows they tried to air after it.  Both that season and this season, ABC has consistently had two shows on their Tuesday schedule which has struggled to break a 1.0. This season, the high-profiled Muppets are asked to self-start on the fall
schedule, which is something it most likely will do well. For starters, it already has much hype, the trailer was well-received, and insiders report that ABC loved its presentation even more so than the other comedies they ordered to series. Although many expected either Blackish or The Middle in the time slot, this could actually work. I would encourage everyone to give it a try—I did not expect to like the trailer nearly as much as I did. This would lead into Fresh Off The Boat, which did a decent job self-starting this season. It was good enough for a renewal, but not good enough to be considered a breakout hit. With a good leadin and maybe even some awards love for Constance Wu, we should see it grow. SHIELD will follow at 9, and then the male-skewing Quantico Wicked City at 10. The question is if Quantico Wicked City can defy the odds by being a hit show despite a mediocre lead-in. ABC has not seen much success in that time slot in years.

Wednesday
Every time I watch The Middle (which is every week), ABC starts with an announcement along the lines of "Tonight's all-new with The Middle, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, and Blackish, later Nashville and Kimmel". Turns out everyone watching The Middle will hear that exact same announcement next season, despite speculation of something moving away from the night. I'm genuinely surprised that neither The Goldbergs nor Blackish will be anchors, and
that neither The Middle nor Blackish will be paired with Fresh Off The Boat on Tuesdays. This proves ABC's confidence in The Muppets, which hopefully works out for their sake—last time they overestimated the power of SHIELD and as a result The Goldbergs did not see the ratings they presumably thought it would. Nashville not moving to Sundays is a shocker to me. Considering Secrets & Lies, which was on Sunday this spring, will be used as a gap show for Nashville, I was surprised they didn't move them to Sunday at 10, otherwise known as the syndication farm slot. I think the Blackish leadin can be used for much better, and that they should have picked up a dramedy. Maybe Mix just wasn't executed well enough. The only reason I can think of to keep Nashville as is because it airs an hour after Empire, albeit on a different network, and maybe ABC hopes that this time around viewers of Empire will want to switch over to Nashville at the end to hear some more singing?

Thursday
#TGIT is back in the fall. That, of course, stands for Thank God It's Thursday, and is the hashtag that has taken over Twitter as hype for Shondaland's three shows: Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder. As expected, her fourth show, The Catch, will premiere in the spring after How to Get Away with Murder's limited run (~16 episodes). Although Scandal has
weakened this spring and fans are mad at Grey's Anatomy, I still think this night will remain the cultural phenomenon is was this season. If The Catch ends up being huge in the ratings, Grey's may be a dark horse to be retired at the end of the season.

Friday
The format of Friday also remains the same: the continuation of multi-cam comedies at 8pm led by Last Man Standing, business reality show Shark Tank at 9pm, and long-running interview news show 20/20 at 10pm. This time, instead of Makibu Country, The Neighbors, or Cristela, the unlucky 8:30 show will be Dr. Ken, led by Community and The Hangover's Ken Jeong, with my reason for potentially tuning in being Trophy Wife's Albert Tsai. ABC seems to have little to no confidence in the show, considering their 0/3 record for the Friday at 8:30 comedy spot, and the fact that it has already been announced that Uncle Buck will be replacing it midseason. This is subject to change, of course, but I think this will be another under-advertised Albert Tsai show.

Sunday
ABC is taking a big risk on Sunday, and quite frankly I do not think it will work out for them. They will stay steady for the first two hours, leading off with America's Funniest Home Videos at 7pm and Once Upon A Time at 8pm, but after that they are premiering two new dramas. The first one, Blood & Oil, is not very hyped right now, while 10pm Biblical show Of Kings and Prophets seems like it
would work more as a show following Once Upon A Time show Quantico looks like it may be cursed by its less-than-ideal time slot despite good critical reviews and hype from fans of the trailer on sites such as SpoilerTV. Assuming all these shows had to make the fall schedule, I think it would have been wise to schedule Oil Quantico Wednesday at 10, and Nashville Sunday at 10, and Of Kings and Prophets at 9.

Ratings Premiere Prediction: Quantico

The Ratings Junkie Monday, June 22, 2015
Ratings Premiere Prediction: Quantico
Time Slot: Sunday at 10
Competition: NFL Football, CSI: Cyber
Lead-in: Blood & Oil
Lead-out: None

Quantico has seen high critical praise so far based on its concept and trailer. Unfortunately, high reviews and high ratings are all but directly proportional. High reviews also don't always mean plump time slots. As a result of Of Kings and Prophets behind retooled, Quantico's time slot went from bad (Tuesday at 10) to worse (Sunday at 10).

Sundays at 10, most people are doing one of three things: a) watching the end of a football game, b) watching a post-Walking Dead recap, or c) getting ready for bed under the false motivation of having a great work week. Notice that none of these include watching a broadcast TV show. This time slot has seen the fall of shows such as Revenge and CSI, as well as numerous failed freshmen. What makes ABC think this show will do much different, and magically launch itself. Based on reviews I would like to see it do well (and seemingly is universally known to be a stronger show creatively than Blood & Oil), and has very minimal scripted competition, but I still can't see this one working. The time slot is just too tough, and should have gone to a struggling veteran like Nashville.

Range: 0.9-1.5
Prediction: 1.1

TV News Roundup

The Ratings Junkie Thursday, May 07, 2015
TV News Roundup
From now through the end of the renewal/cancellation announcements, I will be reporting the highlights of the TV news:

Wednesday, 5/6

  • Supergirl picked up to series by CBS
  • iZombie renewed for a second season by The CW
  • The Mindy Project cancelled by FOX after three full seasons, causing an exception to the syndication rule. Hulu is rumored to be looking at a 2 season, 26 episode renewal.

Thursday, 5/7

  • ABC opts not to pick up multi-cam Delores & Jermaine, starring Jermaine Fowler and Whoopi Goldberg
  • Orphan Black renewed for a fourth season by BBC America
  • Phineas and Ferb will be retired by Disney Channel in June. The show produced four seasons over an eight year interval with 222 episodes aired as of this publishing. The series has been in pitched since 1991 before being picked up in 2007, and it currently has aired more episodes than SpongeBobSquarePants.
  • ABC has passed on sitcoms Family Fortune, Knoxville, and The Brainy Bunch.
  • The CW has passed on Tales from the Darkside.
  • NBC orders multicam sitcom People are Talking to series.
  • NBC orders sitcoms Superstore and Crowded (no pun intended) to series.
  • The Messengers cancelled by The CW after airing just three episodes. No word on if it will finish its order. It will still finish its order.
  • The CW decides not to pick up Cheerleader Death Squad, a show many (including myself) had as locks for a pickup for months.
  • The CW picks up Cordon, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and DC's Legends of To orrow to series. The latter is the formerly untitled spinoff of both Arrow and The Flash. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is an hourlong musical-comedy (think Glee) that was not even a part of pilot season.
  • The CW passes on drama Dead People, concluding their 2015 pilot season.
  • ABC passes on the untitled Judah Miller comedy, as well as sitcom King of 7B.
  • FOX passes on comedy pilot The Perfect Stanleys.
  • Drama Rosewood and comedy The Grinder ordered to series by FOX.
  • ABC opts not to order dramas The Advocate and Kingsmakers. The latter was said to be similar thematically to Revenge, which will air its series finale on Sunday, 5/10.
  • CBS opts not to pick up drama LFE.
  • And the ABC renewals begin! Once Upon A Time has been renewed for a fifth season.
  • FOX orders comedies Grandfathered and The Guide to Surviving Life to series.
  • Surprise! ABC has renewed low-rated bridge series musical comedy Galavant for a second season.
  • ABC orders drama The Catch from Shonda Rhimes, as well as Quantico, Wicked City (a.k.a LA Crime), The Family, Kings and Prophets, Boom, and Untitled Pate and Fishburne Project to series.
  • Forever cancelled after one season by ABC.
  • ABC has ordered comedies The Muppets, The Real O'Neals, and Dr. Ken to series.
  • Cristela cancelled after one season by ABC.
  • Resurrection cancelled after two seasons by ABC.
  • Cooking show filler The Taste cancelled by ABC after three seasons (just 23 episodes).
  • America's Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Dancing with the Stars, Castle, Fresh Off The Boat, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, Marvel's Agent Carter, The Middle, The Goldbergs, Modern Family, Blackish, Nashville, Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, How to get Away with Murder, American Crime, Shark Tank, Beyond the Tank, and Secrets & Lies renewed by ABC.
  • ABC opts not to pick up the untitled Marvel's Agents of SHIELD spinoff. This comes in the wake of Agent Carter's renewal.
  • FOX opts not to pick up former frontrunner music drama Studio City.
Friday, 5/8
  • ABC passes on comedy The 46 Percenters, as well as former frontrunner comedies Chevy and the untitled NBA project.
  • NBC passes on The Curse of the Fuentes Woman
  • ABC passes on Broad Squad
  • CBS passes on comedies Happy Life and the untitled Tommy Johnagin comedy
  • ABC picks up multicam sitcom Uncle Buck, passes on all other pilots, includng Mix, Runner, and The Adversaries. Last Man Standing not looking good.
  • Ready for something necessary? Although it was reported that FOX passed on Studio City last night, reports have begun to corculate that they will revisit their decision now that NBC has shown interest in airing it.
  • FOX orders drama The Frankenstein Code to series.
  • Bones renewed by FOX for Season 11.
  • CBS orders dramas Code Black, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Limitless, and Rush Hour, as well as comedies Life in Pieces and Angel from Hell. Both of these comedies are single cams, whereas none of CBS' comedies this season took on that format.
  • Constantine cancelled by NBC after one season.
  • The Following cancelled by FOX after three seasons.
  • State of Affairs cancelled after one season by NBC.
  • FOX has cancelled Backstrom after one season.
  • About a Boy, One Big Happy, and Marry Me cancelled by NBC.
  • CBS cancels Sunday drama Battle Creek after one season.
  • The McCarthys cancelled by CBS after one season.
  • Reports that Undateable will come back as a live show if renewed.
  • CBS opts not to order comedy pilot Sneaky Pete to series.
  • Stalker cancelled by CBS after one season.
  • CSI: Cyber renewed by CBS for a second season. This is the first freshman midseason show CBS has renewed since Rules of Engagement in 2007.
  • CBS has announced that CSI will end with a two-hour TV movie, airdate TBD. So consider it renewed and cancelled at the same time.
  • FOX orders dramas Minority Report and Lucifer to series.
  • CBS passes on comedy pilot Sneaky Pete to series.
  • NBC passes on comedy pilot Cukkoo.
  • NBC renews The Night Shift, despite getting underperforming ratings, to say the least, after The Voice.
  • NBC orders drama pilots Game of Silence and The Player to series.
  • Undateable renewed for a third season by NBC. All of the episodes will air live, indicating a cut in costs. Maybe this will benefit the show, as practically all their hit shows (Sunday Night Football, The Voice, Saturday Night Live) are live.
  • Yep, NBC actually just renewed The Mysteries of Laura for a second season.

theratingsjunkie's 2014-2015 TV Season Recap

The Ratings Junkie Saturday, May 02, 2015
theratingsjunkie's 2014-2015 TV Season Recap
This post will be later updated to include more networks. Stay tuned!
ABC
-On the comedy side, ABC righted a wrong by moving The Goldbergs sandwiched between their two highest-rated comedies. As a result, The Goldbergs has surpassed The Middle for the title of ABC's #2 comedy.
-They also finally tried a family comedy after Modern Family, seeing the unfortunate demise of Trophy Wife last season due to giving the spot to the failed young-adult party comedies of Super Fun Night and Mixology. Blackish has become a hit, and is the most successful ABC Studios comedy in recent years.
-Fresh Off The Boat defied the odds to hold its own on Tuesdays, rating about ABC's spring scripted average. It should return next season despite still being ABC's #5 comedy.
-Grey's Anatomy helped improve tremendously the Thursday at 8, leading off the "TGIT" block followed by Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder.
-Veteran shows Dancing with the Stars, Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, The Middle, and Modern Family stayed steady in an era where most TV shows are down, making them look even better than they did last season.
-Castle's ratings took a dive, making it look like next season will be its last. It also took away the possibility of using it to fix a problem time slot.
-Resurrection saw a huge fall to become one of the network's lowest-rated shows.
-Despite underwhelming, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD still remains a somewhat reliable player in ABC's lineup.
-Once Upon A Time started strong, then sizzled out to the point where it is now below seven or eight of their shows.
-Selfie and Manhattan Love Story did terrible right out of the gate.
Overall Grade: A-

Bubble Shows Analysis: NBC

The Ratings Junkie Saturday, May 02, 2015
Bubble Shows Analysis: NBC

NBC has already granted renewals to its biggest hits: The Blacklist, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Law & Order: SVU, and Grimm. It has also cancelled A to Z, Bad Judge, Constantine and Allegiance. On top of that, veterans Parks & Recreation and Parenthood have ended their runs this season.
About A Boy, Marry Me, State of Affairs, and American Odyssey have next to no chance of returning, but will still be included in the table as nothing official has been said. Undateable has a very high chance of being renewed, and as such is not considered to be a bubble show in is particular article. NBC has three shows on the bubble at the current moment, none of which can squeak out a 1.5 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. In other words, their only chances of returning are the fact that NBC's scripted average is despairingly low at around a 1.1 rating. Without further ado:
The Mysteries of Laura
Mysteries of Laura
The Mysteries of Laura is a classic case of a show which has only made it as far as it has due to the overall shape of the network. Many predicted that the show would have been pulled by midseason, but achieving low 1s was still enough to be NBC's top-rated freshman series. However, it has since sunk to sub-1 levels, and will be preempted for Chicago Fire soon. Furthermore, it provides absolutely no competition for Survivor, The Middle, The Goldbergs, or even a much weaker American Idol. Instead, it has provided ratings along the lines of, and sometimes below, those of hit-by-CW-standards Arrow. I do not see any scenario of it coming back, as they have strong pilots in The Neil Patrick Harris Variety Show, Heroes: Reborn, Shades of Blue, and Chicago Med. It would only sink further next season, and the only reason why it is even being considered on the bubble in this article is that somehow, it is at 88% of NBC's scripted average despite having to self-start the night at 8pm.
Prediction: Cancelled
One Big Happy
One Big Happy
One Big Happy is doing no better than other shows in the time slot have done (The New Normal, Growing Up Fisher). Both were cancelled. One Big Happy has held up relatively well over its run so far (it only has a six episode order) even when The Voice went to a clip show. One thing to consider is that although it is in the low 1s only a half hour after The Voice ends, it is also a comedy on NBC. This is a genre in which nothing has been working since The Office, with Undateable, the ended Go On, and About A Boy getting decent ratings only because they aired following The Voice. Although it appears that NBC had little confidence in the show through its six-episode order, it is still holding up mediocrely. They could always use it for another, somewhat longer, order.
Prediction: Renewed
The Night Shift
The Night Shift
Like with The Mysteries of Laura and One Big Happy, The Night Shift should be cancelled without questions asked. NBC moved The Blacklist, which collapsed on Thursdays, and gave this summer show the coveted post-Voice time slot. Some who have watched say that it is simply a knock-off version of Grey's Anatomy, or really any medical drama. It has only been able to hold on to about 1/3 to 1/2 of its lead-in, and is consistently in the 1.2-1.4 range. When NBC tried it on Tuesday without The Voice, it sunk to a 1.0. That being said, such a number is not that much below NBC's 2015 scripted average. I can see them considering to use it in the summer again, maybe. Just don't expect it on the fall schedule with Chicago Med arriving.
Prediction: Renewed
NBC Image

Bubble Shows Analysis: FOX

The Ratings Junkie Saturday, May 02, 2015
Bubble Shows Analysis: FOX

FOX has already given out many renewals this season: Bob's Burgers, The Simpsons, Brooklyn 9-9, The Last Man On Earth, Gotham, New Girl, Empire, and even Sleepy Hollow have all been renewed. Worse news came for Mulaney, Gracepoint, and Red Band Society, all of which premiered in the fall and were over by spring. This means that FOX has only a few scripted shows left to deal with: Family Guy, The Following, Weird Loners, Backstrom, The Mindy Project, and Bones.
Weird Loners and Backstrom are both currently achieving sub-1 ratings, meaning they have absolutely no chance of returning next season—the ratings are simply too low, and FOX needs room for upcoming pilots. A similar fate will most likely also come for The Following, which is only in the low 1s and is by no means going to reach syndication. Family Guy is one of FOX's top-rated shows at the moment, although its scheduling is certainly very funky and has not "officially" been renewed, but expect to see new episodes next season (some of which may be left over from this production cycle). Finally, The Mindy Project is almost certain for renewal for syndication purposes, even if it requires NBC Universal, the production company, to significantly cut the production license fee. This leaves just one show which should truly be considered to be "on the bubble": Bones, a tenth season crime procedural dramedy.

Bones premiered on September 13, 2005, and over 200 episodes later is FOX's fourth-longest-running show, behind The Simpsons, American Idol, and Family Guy. However, it is now hovering in the low 1s, and is around 70% of FOX's scripted average. Nearly everything above this line has been renewed, while everything below it either have been or will be cancelled—save for The Mindy Project, which will be renewed for syndication purposes at just 56% of the scripted average. Although last year I heard that this 10th season would be the last, if contracts can be resigned I think it could make for either a great pairing with the low-rated Sleepy Hollow on Thursdays until American Idol comes back, or lead off an all-veteran Friday night.
Prediction: Renewed
On a side note, it should also be considered that Bones has survived many time slot changes, and changing the slot so much may have hurt the show. In fall 2013, Bones premiered on a Monday, switched to Friday where it became an excellent performer for that night's standards, only to move back to Monday. What's more, they moved it to Thursday this season, had it take a nice long break for American Idol, them brought it back again. Such scheduling, coupled with the fact that it has to now face The Big Bang Theory's mid 3s, is my theory for why its ratings have gone so low.

Bubble Shows Analysis: CBS

Bubble Shows Analysis: CBS
CBS is perhaps the toughest network to predict at this moment, with the vast number of its shows being aging, low-to-mediocrely rated procedural dramas. With that being said, here are my bubble show predictions:
The Good Wife
The Good Wife never really received great ratings—just passable, perhaps along with critical awards acclaim, something typically reserved for cable shows. Furthermore, it hits an upper class demo that many shows do not. I have also heard that the plan was a seven-season storyline. But will critical acclaim and this storyline plan be enough to outweigh its consistent 1.0s? I don't think so. When it comes down to it, a show like The Good Wife will only be saved if it does well enough in syndication. However, with similarly-rated-and-styled Madam Secretary already renewed, I think CBS may be planning to have it take over for The Good Wife.
Prediction: Cancelled/Ended
CSI and CSI: Cyber
I packaged these two together here because I simply cannot see two shows of the same low-rated franchise being renewed. However, I also don't think two shows from such a legendary, long-running franchise will be cancelled in the same yet either, which would end the entire franchise. Doing such may anger fans and backfire. The original CSI went from being a 1.7-2.0 show on Wednesday last season to a 0.9-1.1 Sunday show. It had the misfortune of an on-again, off-again schedule due to football, and when it did air did not finish until well after 11pm (sometimes closer to midnight). Further proof that the time slot hurt CSI was that it hit a high airing Tuesday at 10, despite following reruns. Still, such a long-running show should be able to withstand a move, regardless of the time slot. In my opinion, the question is if CBS wants to give a final season to CSI as a goodbye to the franchise, or try to continue it by opting to renew CSI: Cyber instead.

It should be remembered that CBS aired a commercial promoting the CSI season finale as a series finale. Although the network later stated that it was a mix-up, and they want CSI around for "time to come", do not take that as a sign of renewal. Or cancellation for that matter.

My prediction will be updated later in the week once the rating for CSI:Cyber's special Tuesday airing is released. But all things considered, including the fact that CBS has not renewed a new midseason show in years:

Prediction for CSI: Renewed
Prediction for CSI:Cyber: Cancelled

Hawaii 5-0

This is Hawaii 5-0's second season airing on a Friday, and I have to admit I did not expect it to make it this far. From here on out, whether the show is renewed or not will most likely have to do with syndication revenue. I have heard that Hawaii 5-0 has not done too well in syndication, and the fact that shows such as Madam Secretary and Elementary are reserved spots on the schedule may hurt its chances of coming back as well. However, the show is holding up very well for a Friday night, and therefore I think it can squeak out another renewal. Keep in mind though that if a show such as The Good Wife, which I predict will not return, does indeed return, that could potentially push Hawaii 5-0 from renewal to cancellation. So, here is my very hesitant prediction, but a prediction nonetheless:

Prediction: Renewed
