Ratings Analysis: A 10-season run came to an end on NBC as 'The Blacklist' (0.26, +0.06/0.22, -0.04) aired its two-hour series finale. Though the long-running drama did jump to a new season high at 8, it dropped by four-hundredths for the 9 p.m. episode. Considering this is a show that aired for nearly a decade, it clearly went out with a whimper. The peacock network aired a 'Magnum PI' rerun (0.14) in the 10 p.m. time slot. Over on ABC, game shows 'Generation Gap' (0.37, -0.07) and 'The Chase' (0.33, -0.04) dealt with sizable blows. Despite the declines, the 10 p.m. encore of 'Press Your Luck' (0.30) was even with its week-ago showing. Reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.28), 'Ghosts' (0.24), 'So Help Me Todd' (0.19), and 'CSI: Vegas' (0.14) were mostly up on CBS. Repeats of 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' (0.11) and 'Stars on Mars' (0.09) completely underwhelmed on Fox. The CW had repeat showings of 'Walker' (0.03) and 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.05).
Thursday TV Ratings 7/6/23: The Chase and Generation Gap Rise, The Blacklist Declines (UPDATED)
Ratings Analysis: 'Generation Gap' (0.44, +0.09) and 'The Chase' (0.37, +0.07) both soared past their week-ago premieres on ABC, with 'Gap' registering as the top-rated program of the evening. In the 10 p.m. hour, a rerun of 'Press Your Luck' (0.30) also improved when compared to last week. NBC's 'The Blacklist' (0.20, -0.05) took a hit and barely beat out the 9 p.m. repeat of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.19). The 10 o'clock encore of 'Magnum PI' (0.15) was up by two-hundredths from the June 29th one. Reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.25) and 'Ghosts' (0.18) declined on CBS, while encores of 'So Help Me Todd' (0.16) and 'CSI: Vegas' (0.14) were flat. Fox had another round of reruns in the form of 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' (0.13) and 'Stars on Mars' (0.11). 'Walker' (0.03) and 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.03) were in repeat-mode on The CW.
Finals Update: 'The Chase' (+0.1) and the repeat of 'So Help Me Todd' (+0.1) adjusted up.
Thursday TV Ratings 6/29/23: Generation Gap and The Chase Rise in Premieres, The Blacklist Also Rises (UPDATED)
Ratings Analysis: Season two of game show 'Generation Gap' (0.35) got off to a healthy start on ABC. Though this was over a tenth lower than last year's debut (0.46), it was a few ticks higher than the show's September 2022 finale (0.32). At 9, 'The Chase' (0.30) went six-hundredths above its last original from February (0.24). A repeat of 'Press Your Luck' (0.25) closed out the alphabet network's night of premieres. On NBC, 'The Blacklist' (0.25, +0.04) rebounded and led into repeats of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.18) and 'Magnum P.I.' (0.13). CBS's reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.32), 'Ghosts' (0.21), 'So Help Me Todd' (0.16), and 'CSI: Vegas' (0.14) crushed Fox's encores of 'Alert' (0.15) and 'Stars on Mars' (0.10). The CW had another round of repeats in the form of 'Walker' (0.04) and 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.03).
Finals Update: The repeat of 'So Help Me Todd' (+0.1) adjusted up.
Thursday TV Ratings 6/22/23: NBA Draft Rises from 2022, The Blacklist Slips After Week Off, The Miracle Children of the Amazon Special Weak (UPDATED)
Ratings Analysis: The '2023 NBA Draft' (0.44) grew by nearly 13% from the '2022 Draft' (0.39) in the Adults 18-49 demographic and led ABC to a Thursday-night victory. 'The Blacklist' (0.21, -0.04) lost four-hundredths on NBC and lost to CBS's rerun of 'Young Sheldon' (0.25) head-on. NBC finished out the evening with reruns of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.16) and 'Magnum PI' (0.14). Outside of 'Sheldon', CBS had encores of 'Ghosts' (0.20), 'So Help Me Todd' (0.19), and 'CSI: Vegas' (0.14). On Fox, the 'TMZ Investigates' special about the Miracle Children of the Amazon (0.21) posted a run-of-the-mill rating (by Fox summer standards). That telecast was followed by a rerun of 'Stars on Mars' (0.14) that was only a few ticks behind first-run episodes. The CW went with repeats of 'Walker' (0.04) and 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.04).
Finals Update: The repeat of 'Law & Order: SVU' (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of 'Stars on Mars' (-0.1) adjusted down.
Thursday TV Ratings 6/8/23: The Blacklist Hits New Season High, 100 Days to Indy Ticks Down for Finale, Young Sheldon Repeat Leads (UPDATED)
Ratings Analysis: NBC's 'The Blacklist' (0.25, +0.05) grew by five-hundredths from the latter-half of last week's double-pump and eked out a new season high. But, despite its best efforts, the drama was bested by CBS's reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.29) and 'Ghosts' (0.26). NBC had the upper-hand over CBS later in the night as repeats of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.20) and 'Magnum PI' (0.18) outpaced encores of 'So Help Me Todd' (0.19) and 'CSI: Vegas' (0.15). Nonetheless, the 0.29 posted by 'Sheldon' ended up being enough to top the evening altogether. On ABC, encores of 'Judge Steve Harvey' (0.21/0.19/0.19) were modest at best but still a good bit higher than Fox reruns of 'Alert' (0.13) and 'Animal Control' (0.15/0.18). However, 'Animal Control' deserve some credit for building on 'Alert' and continuing to grow at 9:30. The CW had a rerun of 'Walker' (0.06) and the finale of '100 Days To Indy' (0.04, -0.01). 'Indy' was the only other original aside from 'Blacklist' and dipped by a hundredth when compared to its previous episode.
Finals Update: The repeat of 'Ghosts' (+0.1) adjusted up.
Thursday TV Ratings 6/1/23: NBA Finals Down Slightly from 2022, The Blacklist Ties Season High in Move to Thursday (UPDATED)
Ratings Analysis: All eyes were on the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat as they faced off in game one of the 2023 NBA finals. ABC's broadcast of the game posted a strong 3.54 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic and 11.04 million in total viewers. Compared to the first game of 2022 (3.63), this was just 2% lower in the ratings and 3% lower in total viewers (11.40). Earlier in the evening, 'NBA Countdown' (0.91) easily topped its 8 p.m. competitors. On NBC, 'The Blacklist' (0.24, +0.05) made the move to Thursday nights and tied its season high in the process. However, most of that growth disappeared for its second episode that aired at 9 (0.20, -0.04). A rerun of 'Magnum PI' (0.16) dropped by four-hundredths of a point from there in the 10 p.m. hour. CBS's reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.32), 'Ghosts' (0.27), 'So Help Me Todd' (0.19), and 'CSI: Vegas' (0.19) were unsurprisingly stronger than Fox's encores of 'Alert' (0.15) and 'Animal Control' (0.13/0.14). The CW aired repeats of 'Walker' (0.04) and '100 Days To Indy' (0.03).
Sunday TV Ratings 5/28/23: The Blacklist Rises, HouseBroken Sets New Low, 60 Minutes Repeat Leads Dismal Night (UPDATED)
Ratings Analysis: Since most shows wrapped up their seasons a week or two ago, only two originals were shown on Sunday evening. The stronger of the two was NBC's 'The Blacklist' (0.19, +0.04). The 10-year old drama gained four-hundredths and tied the rerun of 'Magnum PI' (0.19) that led into it. Despite the growth in the back-half of the peacock network's night, the 7 p.m. repeat of 'Dateline' (0.23) bested both shows. The weaker of the two was Fox's 'HouseBroken' (0.09, -0.02). The cartoon sitcom lost two-hundredths and posted a putrid 0.09 rating for both the 9 p.m. episode and the 9:30 p.m. episode. This serves as a new low for the series, replacing the low (0.11) that it posted just last week. This result was so abysmal that even reruns of 'Don't Forget the Lyrics!' (0.14) and 'Beat Shazam' (0.11) were a good bit higher at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively. CBS went with encores of '60 Minutes' (0.31/0.24), 'Let's Make a Deal' (0.24), and 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.15). The 7 p.m. rerun of '60 Minutes' topped the night altogether. ABC had some solid repeats of 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.25/0.27) and a lackluster rerun marathon of 'The Conners' (0.15/0.13/0.12/0.11). The CW barely even registered at all in the Adults 18-49 demographic as repeats of '100 Days to Indy' (0.01) and 'The Great American Joke Off' (0.01) narrowly missed the dreaded 0.00 rating. The repeat of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.02) that aired in-between was a touch less embarrassing.
Finals Update: The 8 PM repeat of 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (+0.1) adjusted up.
Sunday TV Ratings 5/21/23: NCIS: Los Angeles Rises for Series Finale, American Idol Ends Down, The Simpsons Ticks Up For Finale (UPDATED)
Ratings Analysis: 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.37, +0.12) wrapped up its 14-season run in solid fashion on CBS. The long-running drama bowed out by growing to its highest rating in nearly three months and was followed by a retrospective special (0.27) that aired in the 10 p.m. hour. '60 Minutes' (0.49, +0.07) and 'The Equalizer' (0.48, +0.08) also managed to climb higher, with 'Equalizer' closing out its season with a rating that outpaced its last four episodes. ABC's 'American Idol' (0.83, -0.09) was down close to a tenth for its season finale. At 7, 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.39, -0.34) lost the NBA boost it had last week and came back down to earth as a result. On Fox, 'The Simpsons' (0.23, +0.01) picked up a hundredth for its finale while 'The Great North' (0.17, 0.00) held steady. In the 9 p.m. hour, 'Bob's Burgers' (0.19, -0.02) and 'HouseBroken' (0.11, -0.04) took a hit. Reruns of 'Simpsons' (0.09) and 'Bob's' (0.12) occupied the 7 p.m. hour. NBC had a repeat of 'Dateline' (0.23), an encore of 'Magnum PI' (0.15), and a stable edition of 'The Blacklist' (0.15, 0.00). Repeat showings of '100 Days to Indy' (0.02), 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.03), and 'The Great American Joke Off' (0.03) underwhelmed on the CW.
Finals Update: 'American Idol' (+0.1), 'The Equalizer' (+0.1), and '60 Minutes' (+0.1) adjusted up.
