Superstore Season 3 Finale Review

A year ago, the season finale of Superstore involved a tornado destroying the store, and while the tornado hit, Superstore fans who have been cheering on the main will they/won't they couple received a small victory when Amy and Jonah shared a kiss. This season started out with the fallout of that, and after many episodes of making their story very typical and not taking it much of anywhere, the last two episodes progressed the story with another kiss and Jonah breaking up with Kelly. Now the stage has been set for the season finale.

S3E22 "Town Hall"

The episode begins with the Cloud 9 employees being prepared for a town hall that will be held in the store and broadcast to all Cloud 9 stores. They are given a list of topics not to talk about, and one of them is Myrtle. Amy and Jonah are curious about this, so they do some digging. They discover that Jeff wrote Myrtle up for a variety of small offenses, which is very bizarre. They go to Jeff about this, who reveals that corporate wants older (so, more expensive) employees to be written up for minor offenses, so that there's a reason to fire them.

Amy and Jonah make it their mission to find evidence of this and bring it to attention. Amy distracts Laurie, hilariously inquiring about her sexual orientation and brainstorming people to set her up with, as Jonah steals her phone. Once they find the email, they have to come up with a creative way to get to the town hall, as their path is blocked by Laurie. Their rush is fairly entertaining, and they make it in time, while Dina distracts in some funny ways. The funniest moment at the town hall is when Jeff removes his disguise and Cheyenne, who knew about this all along, gasps. Jeff confronts the CEO, preparing to share the information he has evidence of. However, the plan is destroyed when Jeff is offered a job in Chicago.

Jeff insists to the group that he will be of help on the inside, but they remain discouraged. It really is disappointing, the episode spent the entire time on this story, only for them to gain nothing. The episode didn't spend any time on developing Amy and Jonah's relationship, only having them work together on this, but the ending had them unable to resist their urges any longer, and having sex, not knowing they are being broadcast in every Cloud 9 store. The two have taken another step closer to being together, but they didn't talk about what this means, just had sex, and with all the build-up, it doesn't feel like much of anything really.

This episode did a poor job of building off of the last one when it comes to Amy and Jonah's relationship. It felt like things quickly got back to the way they had been before for most the episode, and then gave us a development that really wasn't much. Meanwhile, the main story of the episode had some good funny moments, but felt disappointing in the end.

Score: 6/10

Superstore S3E21 Review

As Superstore heads toward the end of its third season, after it set plot points in motion last week, this week's episode picks up right where the last one left off, and sets up the season finale.

S3E21 "Aftermath"

It was obvious that this week would give us a handful of Amy and Jonah drama. From the start of the episode to the end, it delivers on that, and it's frustrating, but not for the usual reasons. Throughout this season, I've complained at how the story has been dragged out. This week, it goes somewhere. It's frustrating because the characters are frustrating, and that's not always a bad thing. We start out with Amy and Jonah as we left them, following the kiss and Amy's reveal. This sparks some tension between them, as Jonah asks why Amy did that. Amy answers that she wanted to do it before everything changes, and Jonah isn't a big fan of that answer.

Later in the episode, Amy tries to have a conversation with Jonah, but that keeps being prevented. Finally, near the end of the episode, Jonah wants to talk, but Amy now isn't interested, which leads to a fight between the two of them. Jonah accuses Amy of only wanting to talk on her terms, never on anyone else's, and goes on to get upset with her for waiting until he was with Kelly to be interested in him, and tells her that she isn't as stuck as she acts like she is. What he says hurts, despite there being truth to much of it. The episode's end is perhaps the most frustrating though, because after Jonah's attempts to make things with Kelly more serious throughout the episode, he breaks up with her right after she says that she loves him. Poor Kelly, she doesn't deserve this.

Not everything having to do with Amy is so serious though. Everyone at Cloud 9 finds out about her pregnancy because Cheyenne can't keep her mouth shut, and the scene where it is revealed that everyone knows about it is very funny. Glenn's excitement about this is another great source of comedy, especially as he tells someone who doesn't know her about Amy's pregnancy on a conference call. Cheyenne and Mateo try to help out Amy because of her pregnancy, but Amy doesn't want charity. Mateo's attempt to give Amy $20 is especially entertaining, and gets even better when Bo takes the $20. Also, the writers make great use of Justine here, with the events that no one wants to go to.

While everything with Amy's pregnancy and Amy and Jonah's feelings for each other happens, the rest of the episode deals with Glenn and Dina's excitement over the idea of the CEO of Cloud 9 visiting their store. Glenn and Dina, when put together, as often happens, is usually used for contrast, so it was entertaining to see them both being excited, and feeding off of each other's excitement. There are some very funny moments in this story, such as when the duo takes over the intercom while Garrett is making an announcement about a lost child, when Sandra is excluded from the group photo, and as Glenn and Dina decide to go overboard, and instead of going with just a photo like they are supposed to, make a video. Their attempts at directing Cheyenne and Mateo are very funny, as is the final result. I also loved Mateo's line about how a TV show should be made about them.

This episode was made strong by being full of not just great comedy, but by pushing story forward, and rooting it in the characters. I felt that how frustrating Amy and Jonah (especially Jonah) were in this episode went a bit too far, but otherwise, I think this was a great episode.

Score: 9.5/10

Superstore S3E20 Review

This week's episode of Superstore focuses on the ongoing story for much of this season, Dina being a surrogate for Glenn and Jerusha. In this episode, Glenn and Jerusha find out the gender of their baby, and Dina worries about giving birth.

S3E20 "Gender Reveal"

The episode begins with Dina, Glenn, and Jerusha at the doctor's, looking at a sonogram. Dina's lack of interest, as well as her later disgust, are funny. However, then Dina starts to become worried about giving birth. Conversations with a couple of mothers make her more nervous, and that is quite entertaining. Dina freaks out, and she tells Glenn she doesn't want to carry his baby anymore. Her freak out is very funny, as she tries to come up with a way for the baby to be born without her carrying it anymore.

Amy and Cheyenne try to calm her down, claiming that giving birth wasn't that bad. While they talk, Amy discovers that a pregnancy test that she recently used was recalled because it was giving people false negatives. After taking an accurate test, she discovers that she's pregnant, and Adam is the father. This is a twist I did not expect, and I'm not sure how I feel about it, since we already had an episode where the story was Amy worrying that she might be pregnant. At the end of the episode, Amy and Jonah kiss. I'm glad that something actually happened here, not just more hinting at things. Hopefully the final two episodes of the season move things along here.

The Cloud 9 employees convince Glenn and Jerusha to have a gender reveal party. So, they plan it for them. Garrett is given the responsibility of handling the envelope that has the gender of the baby inside, and of course, since it is Garrett's responsibility, he fails at getting the color of the inside of the cake to match the gender. His attempt to cover up this is quite entertaining, as he goes on a rant about gender being a social construct. Also, the reaction to the inside of the cake being white was very funny, especially when Marcus announces excitedly that they are having a white baby.

After Jonah finds out that Jeff doesn't really work at Target, Mateo convinces Jonah to talk Jeff into getting a job. They act as good cop, bad cop, but Jonah keeps thinking that Mateo isn't acting anymore. The scenes between Mateo and Jonah are quite funny, especially the final one, where Mateo lets Jonah know that he too has been in plays.

This was an entertaining episode throughout, with each story being entertaining, and every part of the episode, aside from the story with Jonah and Mateo, connecting in interesting ways. The show seems to be preparing for the end of the season, and I'm glad that they are actually heading somewhere now, instead of wasting time.

Score: 8.5/10

Superstore S3E19 Review

Dina encourages the Cloud 9 employees to sell lottery tickets as lottery mania sweeps in, while Amy tries to get a raise on this week's Superstore.

S3E19 "Lottery"

The episode begins with all of the Cloud 9 employees sharing what they would spend the money on if they won the lottery, and after charity is mentioned, the others hilariously also add on that they would donate to charity as well. It's also very funny when Glenn talks about how he might not work on Thursdays if he won the lottery. Cheyenne and Mateo discuss picking numbers, where Cheyenne is very funny, and they decide to split the winnings if one of them wins.

Dina ends up in a rivalry with someone from another store, and attempts to sell more tickets at their store. Sandra tells Dina about how Garrett is discouraging people from buying lottery tickets (but she doesn't want to hear about anything else, there is a funny moment here where Dina tells Sandra she doesn't like tattletales), so Dina tricks Garrett into thinking there's something in it for him if they sell the winning ticket. Unfortunately, this story doesn't really go much of anywhere interesting from here.

Amy wants a raise, and she is very nervous about asking for one. She goes to Glenn to ask, and it's very funny when she barges into a conversation to ask. Glenn shares that he is no longer allowed to give raises (or hugs, which he is even more disappointed about, and causes some funny moments). She and Jonah track down the district manager, and find out she's golfing nearby. However, Amy ends up hitting her with a golf cart. Amy asks for a raise anyway, and of course, she doesn't get one. There feels like the stakes are incredibly low here, as Amy doesn't even seem to care that she doesn't get this raise.

The episode ends with a very typical scene, as Amy and Jonah share a moment full of romantic tension, while Jonah misses a call from Kelly. Superstore has been annoyingly typical all this season when it comes to the Amy and Jonah romance, but this is a new level.

This episode got off to a strong start, with quite a few funny moments, but the episode's stories just fell apart, and Amy and Jonah had a very, very typical ending. This was an episode with potential, but it did not deliver.

Score: 4.5/10

Superstore S3E18 Review

This week on Superstore, Cloud 9 is hosting a bunch of local vendors, which includes Glenn's wife Jerusha, and a woman that Garrett is interested in.

S3E18 "Local Vendors Day"

The episode begins with Glenn telling everyone about his wife Jerusha's needlepoint, and the two of them pretend that they don't know each other, which leads to a hilarious moment where the employees say that Glenn and his wife are in an open relationship to mess with him. Glenn pressures the employees into buying things from Jerusha, and when Jonah mentions this to him he has a very funny line, saying "I think if I was doing something subconsciously, I'd know it."

Glenn turns his pressure to others, and there's a funny moment where he gives someone two hundred dollars to buy things from Jerusha, but he goes to the wrong stand. In the end, Glenn pressures the employees once again, causing Jerusha to sell out. I get Glenn supporting his wife, but the lengths he goes to here seem unrealistically far.

After realizing that she isn't that Latina when it's pointed out by the beverage guy, that's Latino, she is seeing, Amy tries to prove that she is Latina. She ends up talking in Spanish to him, but she doesn't know that much Spanish, and when he talks quickly, she doesn't know what she has agreed to.

She goes to others to try to figure it out, and their suggestions are pretty funny. The most annoying part of this story though is Jonah's reaction when he discovers that Amy is seeing someone. Eventually Amy admits that she doesn't know what she agreed to, but continues to pretend she knew the rest of what he was talking about.

Garrett takes an interest in one of the local vendors, a woman selling craft beer. However, after tasting a sample of the beer, he is convinced that it is Bud Light, which she insists it isn't. This goes on for a while, until she eventually admits that it is. This is a mildly enjoyable story, but it didn't really have much to it.

None of the stories this week were all that good, but they weren't bad either. This was a pretty good episode, but really nothing special.

Score: 6.5/10

Superstore S3E17 Review

Now that Jeff has left his job, there is a new district manager at Cloud 9, and she wants to save money and make some cuts.

S3E17 "District Manager"

The episode begins with the arrival of the new district manager, and there are some funny lines about the fact that she is a woman, and how Glenn is uncomfortable about that, and how some employees feel differently about her because of it. The district manager asks Amy about a lot of the employees, and she discovers that the reason she is asking her this is so she can find out who to fire. Myrtle, it turns out, costs the store a lot, and when Amy shares that she isn't a very good employee, Glenn is asked to fire her.

When Amy finds out that Myrtle is going to get fired because of what she said, her and Jonah work to find other ways that the store could save money so that they can keep Myrtle. Amy is very funny as she gets excited about savings, and the two prepare a presentation, which is very funny in how awkward it is, and in how Amy hates a joke that Jonah loves. The two also show their great chemistry here; while I frequently complain about the will they won't they story, America Ferrera and Ben Feldman have great chemistry. In the end, Myrtle still gets fired, which made this story have an unpredictable ending.

When Glenn is asked to fire Myrtle, he struggles with doing so, and decides he wants to make Myrtle's last day a great one before she leaves. It's very funny when he tries to find out what a perfect day for her would be, and all of her answers involve spending time with her late husband, as well as when he tries to make her day great by having a local weatherman come to the store, but he turns out to be from a different channel than the one she watches. In the end, Glenn finds something that would make Myrtle's day when he lets her drive a truck, but she hilariously turns out to be terrible at it, as one would expect.

With the district manager around, Mateo decides that he needs to improve his skills at the register. When he is unable to, Garrett encourages him to go onto Glenn's computer and change his numbers. It is very funny as Mateo closes the blinds, worried about getting caught, and the two view the other tabs that Glenn has open on his computer. After the district manager sees the incredibly high numbers that Mateo has (121, not 120, to not be suspicious), she has him demonstrate for others. His attempts to not demonstrate are hilarious, especially his last resort of pretending that there are bees stinging him.

This was a very full episode, and I almost forgot to write about Dina. She wasn't the funniest this week, but she had her moments in her own small story, as she attempted to hide her pregnancy from the district manager. Why? Because she's Dina. As she explains to Glenn, when she finds out someone's pregnant, she thinks about all of the bathroom breaks and doctor visits. There's also a funny moment when she worries Glenn, explaining that there's always the possibility of a miscarriage, and that she lives in a neighborhood that isn't so safe.

This was a strong Superstore episode, with no focus on the romantic relationships, funny moments all around, and giving Myrtle a chance to shine. I haven't been as impressed with this season of Superstore as I have the previous two, but this episode shows that the show can still deliver.

Score: 9.5/10

Superstore S3E16 Review

It's Cloud 9 versus Target this week on Superstore, when Jeff goes to work for Target, and Glenn believes that Jeff is trying to poach his employees, so he tries to poach Target employees, as a total battle between Glenn and Jeff ensues.

S3E16 "Target"

The episode begins with a going away party for Jeff, which is hilariously awkward. The best moment here is when Sandra shares the memories that she had made up when she pretended that she and Jeff were dating. Garrett claims that Jeff offered him more money to work at Target to try to get a raise, but it ends up leading to conflict between Glenn and Jeff. This conflict goes a bit over-the-top, but it is fairly funny. Glenn and Garrett go to Target to try to poach their employees, but it doesn't really work. There ends up being a really funny twist, when it turns out that Jeff doesn't actually work at Target, he just said that he does because he doesn't want people thinking that he's unemployed. This twist makes it really funny when Glenn mentions Jeff to someone at Target.

Dina asks Amy to go on a double date with her. The way that she convinces Amy to go is very funny, as she shows a picture to Justine that makes Amy want to go, but then it turns out that the picture is very old. Amy, having a horrible time on the date with the old guy, spends a lot of the time away from the table, pretending that she needs to talk to the beverage vendor that goes to Cloud 9. They have a good time talking, and at the end of the episode he shows up at Cloud 9, despite it not being the day that he is supposed to go there.

Jonah and Kelly are talking about moving in together, but Jonah is being really obnoxious, as he has complaints about every potential apartment. The two end up making a furniture display to demonstrate the size of one apartment they are looking at, and it is pretty funny when they tell others that they were asked to make a display, especially when Mateo struggles with the idea that Glenn asked Jonah to make a display, not him. In the end, Kelly asks him if he really wants to move in with her, and later he realizes that he does.

Each of the stories had their enjoyable moments, though Dina and Amy's wasn't that interesting, and Jonah was quite annoying in his. I also didn't like how this episode pushed Amy and Jonah farther away from each other. The story has been dragged out long enough. But, this wasn't a bad episode.

Score: 6/10

Superstore S3E15 Review

After the end of last week's episode revealed to everyone that Amy and Jonah kissed during the tornado, the two of them have to deal with everyone knowing about it. Also, Glenn and Dina decide to offer anyone who admits something that they did wrong amnesty for one day only.

S3E15 "Amnesty"

Somehow inspired by the reveal that Amy and Jonah kissed while Amy was still married, Glenn wants to find out what bad things his employees have done, so he and Dina decide to offer amnesty to anyone who confesses to something that they have done. This story, while providing some solid humor in the strange things that Cloud 9 employees have done, suffers in believability. It's a stretch to believe that Glenn and Dina, especially Dina, would think that this is a good idea, and that everyone would admit everything that they had done.

Garrett and Cheyenne try to come up with things that they can do, now that they will get amnesty, but the things that Cheyenne comes up with aren't very interesting, and Garrett can't decide on anything good. This does lead to a funny moment in the end though, when Glenn regains faith in humanity thanks to Garrett, and kisses his head. Meanwhile, Mateo is worried that Glenn and Dina know that he is undocumented, and spends the episode worried about that. While Mateo doesn't have much of a story, he gets a nice ending, when he finds out that Jeff quit his job for him.

Now that everyone knows about Amy and Jonah's kiss, they all have jokes to make. The funniest moment in all of this is when Sandra makes a joke about Amy and Jonah having sex, but doesn't know the correct hand symbol for sex. Amy and Jonah end up admitting that they had crushes on each other, which makes things very awkward for Kelly. Kelly lashing out at Sandra when she recaps the situation was perfect.

There was nothing all that great about this episode, but nothing really bad about it either. It exhibited true mediocrity. However, I did really like that it advanced Mateo and Jeff's story, as well as Amy and Jonah's to a lesser extent.

Score: 5/10

Superstore S3E14 Review

An injury on the job has potentially major consequences for Mateo due to his immigration status. So, Jonah helps him try to avoid getting compensated by Cloud 9.

S3E14 "Safety Training"

When Amy realizes that she isn't very nice to Kelly (a realization that requires Sandra to recite a list of times where Amy said something mean to Kelly, which is really funny), she decides to be friendly. This, however, leads her to say that she made a mistake that Kelly did. This mistake leads to another incident, which Sandra makes very entertaining, and Amy has to be part of safety training. She convinces Dina to show the video showing that Kelly made the mistake, but acts like she doesn't want to do that, which is really funny. Some technical difficulties result in everyone seeing Amy and Jonah's kiss from the tornado. I'm glad something actually happened with the Amy and Jonah story, as it is being dragged out too much.

After being injured in the Kelly-caused incident, Jonah helps Mateo negotiate with Jeff to get more money from corporate. However, Mateo realizes that his undocumented status may be exposed by accepting money from Cloud 9. It's funny as Jeff keeps offering more and more money, and saying each time that it's the most he can offer. In the end, Mateo realizes that he has to reveal his status to Jeff. It was great to see that the fact that Mateo broke up with Jeff because of this was not forgotten, as I had honestly forgotten about that.

The remaining parts of the episode entertain as Marcus tries to get injured again, realizing that he missed out on getting more money from Cloud 9 when he had cut his thumb off before. It is very funny as he is unable to injure himself, because he is anticipating the attempts. He turns to Garrett for help, and this gets even funnier, as Garrett delights in scaring Marcus. At the end, Garrett delivers a funny speech, as he tells Marcus he won't know when he's going to injure him.

This was a really enjoyable episode of Superstore, one of the best of the season. I liked the advancements in the romantic plots, and there were plenty of funny moments, especially from Sandra, Dina, Marcus, and Garrett. Jonah and Mateo weren't quite as funny, but it was still a good plot.

Score: 9.5/10

Superstore S3E13 Review

Superstore is back; did you miss it when it took three weeks off? The release of a video game causes mayhem in Cloud 9 this week, in the show's post-Olympics return.

S3E13 "Video Game Release"

Amy really wants a copy of a new video game that is being released, but the rule is that she can't buy it until her shift is over, and it will probably be sold out by then. So, her and Jonah head on an adventure through the back of the store. There are some entertaining moments through here, as Amy and Jonah have great chemistry, and the scene where Amy gets a phone call from Dina is especially funny. In the end, Jonah gets Amy the game, and Amy finally admits (to Dina) that she has a crush on Jonah. Finally, progress is being made here. I hope they don't drag out this will they/won't they for more than this season. It's gone on long enough.

In the past, when Glenn has joined in on the being mean to Sandra, I've thought that it seemed unrealistic. So, I was very glad this week when Glenn encouraged Sandra to stand up for herself. The two of them decide to stop being taken advantage of, and it's hilarious when they get mad at a customer for making a mess. However, the two end up taking things a bit far, and it leads to a bunch of moms doing a nurse-in. This protest necessitates a meeting for the store employees, which has a lot of funny lines, with some stupid perspectives. We never see Glenn and Sandra succeeding in getting the moms out of the store, but we do find out that Dina is pregnant, so Glenn's child is on its way.

The rest of the episode deals with Garrett, who is awkward around some sort of celebrity that is in the store. It's funny when Mateo has a normal conversation with this guy, and Garrett is in disbelief about that. This isn't the funniest story, it's something that many shows have done, and it doesn't go much of anywhere, but it isn't bad either. It's a decent way to fill up the remainder of the time in the episode, but nothing more than that.

Glenn, Sandra, and the idiotic people they interacted with in their story in this episode were the funniest part of the episode, though Amy and Jonah's chemistry is reliably enjoyable. Overall, this wasn't a stand-out episode, but it was a very watchable one. Nothing memorable, but nothing that was really bad either, just an enjoyable half-hour.

Score: 7.5/10

Superstore S3E12 Review

Season three of Superstore has shown Amy going through a divorce. In this week's episode, she is ready to start dating again. However, her expectations for what guys she can get are much different than the expectations of her co-workers.

S3E12 "Groundhog Day"

After Mateo and Cheyenne witness an awkward conversation between Amy and a guy, they decide to try to set her up with someone. However, Amy doesn't appreciate what type of guys they think she is on the level of. She ends up having sex with the pharmacist, someone who the others said was a ten. This leads to a very Superstore-style scene, where everyone has to comment on Amy's dating and sex life, which is really funny.

Dina comes to work, despite Glenn's insistence that she doesn't, but he convinces her to relax at the store. She ends up enjoying it, and gets him to then do things for her. This story doesn't really go much of anywhere, Dina just discovers how much she can get away with asking Glenn for.

With Dina relaxing, someone needs to fill her position. Glenn has Garrett do it, leading to Jonah and Kelly to take over the announcements. They act like it is a talk show, which is annoying at first, but enjoyable when they interview Sandra. At the very end of the episode, Jonah is upset because of Amy's current situation, but then suddenly starts behaving like normal at the very end.

The ending of Amy's story was great, but the other stories did not stick the landing. In fact, they didn't really go anywhere, and weren't even all that funny. Amy's story isn't even that funny until that ending.

Score: 4.5/10

Superstore S3E11 Review

Cheyenne brings conflict with her mother to Cloud 9, and Amy specifically, in this week's Superstore. But that's not the only conflict. There's also conflict between Glenn and Dina following what they agreed upon last week, and it ends up requiring a lawyer when it gets heated.

S3E11 "Angels and Mermaids"

Cheyenne's mother is out of jail, and running her life. She decides that Cheyenne's daughter's birthday party should be Green Day themed. Amy ends up getting involved, since she thinks the party should be a more appropriate theme for a two-year-old. Unexpectedly, when Cheyenne decides to go against all of her wishes, Amy ends up taking Cheynne's mother's side on most issues. Eventually, Cheyenne and her mother agree that Amy should stay out of their business, and the final scene here is funny as they tell her this, and a Cloud 9 employee decides to insult Amy's hair.

Glenn and Dina have a little bit of trouble agreeing on a contract for the surrogacy. Glenn brings in a lawyer, and as a result things get tense. The lawyer ends up getting aggressive with Dina, and no one listens to Glenn. Dina begins to bluff by saying that she is going to have unprotected sex with Marcus, and Glenn responds by saying that he got Sandra to be his surrogate. The scene where they are both doing this is really funny, especially with the jokes about Sandra. However, Glenn being mean to Sandra isn't that in-character.

A discussion about whether mermaids are real or not leads to everyone in the breakroom talking about other things that may or may not be real, which leads to a lot of hilarious moments. Jonah discovers that Kelly believes in angels, and he is troubled by that. Garrett tries to help Jonah get over this, because he wants the weekend to himself that he had been expecting. This story has a couple of mildly funny moments, but it isn't that funny or compelling in any way. I did, however, love the fact that Mateo spent the whole day in the breakroom.

Glenn and Dina were the highlight of this episode, though there was no story that was truly bad. Amy and Cheyenne had some good funny moments, thought I wish that their story had more to it. Glenn and Dina were hilarious, while Jonah and Garrett weren't that funny.

Superstore S3E10 Review

This week, the Cloud 9 that our characters work at is about to get an upgrade. However, some of the employees are worried whether this upgrade will actually be a good thing or not.

S3E10 "High Volume Store"

At the beginning of the episode, Jeff has an announcement for the Cloud 9 employees, they are only a few sales away from becoming a Quad-A store. The employees don't care at first, but once they discover that this means that the store will get a Pizza Hut, they hilariously get very excited. Jonah, however, is suspicious, and as a result he, Amy, and Dina go to a Quad-A store to find out what that means.

It's very funny when all the employees say that it is "the best job I've ever had." In reality, working at that store is terrible, so everyone at our Cloud 9's motivations change, they all try to keep the store from reaching the sales goal. These attempts are very funny, I especially enjoyed Marcus being weird, and Dina being herself to customers. However, Bo ends up ruining their plans when he buys a hot tub, and there are no returns on it. The ending here ends up being really unexpected, that they got a lot of counterfeit money, and that brings them down under the target amount.

Glenn also has an announcement at the start of the episode, that he needs a surrogate because Jerusha can't have kids. So, he spends the episode looking for a surrogate. After his search is unsuccessful, he vents to Cheyenne, and she ends up accidentally agreeing to have his baby. She tries to get out of this, saying that Bo wasn't alright with it, but Glenn brings him in and that plan goes awry.

In the end, Glenn realizes what's going on, and is mean to Cheyenne to be nice, which is really funny. The episode ends with Dina agreeing to have Glenn's baby because of how much he is paying for it. This ending is also unexpected, but I like how money was a big motivator for people (both Bo and Dina), since that reflects how much money the characters in this show have.

This was a strong episode. The main story was great, I liked the way that the group's goal changed, and how the end of that story was so unexpected. Also, the reasons behind everyone either wanting or not wanting the store to get an upgrade was great. The other story was enjoyable too, but it wasn't a stand-out one like the other was.

Score: 9.5/10

Superstore S3E9 Review

Sitcom characters often celebrate awards shows that air on the same network their show airs on. Just look at all of the Oscars-related ABC comedy episodes. This year, Superstore is doing this with the Golden Globes, though unlike the ABC comedies, the episode is airing after the awards, rather than before.

S3E9 "Golden Globes Party"

Everyone doubts that Amy will hold her annual Golden Globes party because of her situation with Adam. However, Amy insists that she can do it all by herself. Dina comes to help her set up, but that doesn't keep disasters from happening. It turns out that the barbecue doesn't have propane, and no one can figure out the TV.

Everyone is miserable, they can't leave because Dina won't let them, and it becomes even worse when Glenn, who Amy told not to leave and allowed to have sex in her bed, and his wife Jerusha can be heard having sex. In the end, Amy admits defeat, and everyone leaves. Once they've left, Amy figures out the TV, and there is a sweet moment where she thanks Dina for helping her all throughout the day.

Kelly is having trouble fitting in at the party. She never met a customer that the others impersonate, doesn't know of famous commercials that they talk about, and she tries to introduce a complicated game. At the end of the episode, she is invited to hang out with the rest, showing that they don't dislike her, she just hasn't been around them for as long. There is nothing that funny or anything about this story, but it wasn't exactly boring.

The main story of this episode was the best part of it. Amy's insecurity with her new life situation was great territory for the show to go into, and it was great to see Jonah and Dina support her and try to help when the party ends up going poorly. There was also plenty of little funny moments throughout the episode with the minor characters.

Score: 8/10

Superstore S3E8 Review

Social media is the theme of this first Superstore episode of the new year. The action this week is ignited by a video that a Cloud 9 employee posts that goes viral.

S3E8 "Viral Video"

The episode begins with the Cloud 9 staff being informed that an employee has been fired for farting in coffee cups. This of course leads to some funny dialogue between the employees who of course have to discuss this. As a result of this, Dina wants to see if there is anything bad on any other employee's social media, so she recruits Cheyenne. Dina and Cheyenne end up bonding over this, which is sweet, and they have some funny lines. However, Dina is still Dina, and when Cheyenne confesses something to her, Dina writes her up.

Amy makes a bet with Jonah that she can get as many views on an Instagram video as Kelly, whose popular videos Amy doesn't understand. Amy's attempts at making a video doesn't work out very well, but it is very entertaining for us to watch Jonah and Garrett watch these videos in horror. Amy ends up filming a rat infestation, which gets used as an example of something that the employees shouldn't do, but gets her to her goal.

Glenn suspects that Mateo is submitting fake rewards cards applications to receive the benefit that employees get for signing people up. Mateo's attempts to cover himself after this happens are very funny, though I am surprised that Glenn would be so suspicious, since he tends to be quite trusting and gullible. There are some great jokes throughout, my favorite being when Glenn tries to get Garrett to track a call.

This was a strong return for Superstore. It wasn't perfect, Dina and Cheyenne could have been funnier, and it felt like Glenn's character was somewhat betrayed for plot purposes, but otherwise this was a thoroughly enjoyable half-hour.

Score: 9/10

Superstore S3E7 Review

Though its Thursday run is taking a two-month break, Superstore is returning for one episode on a Tuesday, a Christmas episode, in which the characters are working on Christmas Eve.

S3E7 "Christmas Eve"

At the start of the episode, Dina finds Glenn setting up a nativity scene in the store. It's really funny as she tries to get him to admit that it's a nativity scene by harming the Biblical figures in the scene, leading to the baby Jesus, which causes Glenn to finally intervene.

Dina gets another similarly funny scene when she tells a person ringing a bell outside the door (from The Redemption Corps, the show's version of The Salvation Army) to get farther away from the door because he is activating the automatic door, and she also tells him to ring the bell in a different way. Later, she rescues the reindeer that the guy has with him from the cold, which is very in-character for Dina.

Amy tries to prove that she can be fun, so she becomes crazy Amy, or "cr-Amy", drinking on the job and telling stories about when she was younger and was cool. She calls Adam so he can prove that a story about Amy stealing a teacher's car was true, and they discover that he is at the house of one of the moms at Emma's school.

Amy, Cheyenne, and Dina decide to go to her house, but they've had a lot to drink, so they take motorized carts. When they arrive at her house, Amy realizes it's a mistake, but before they can leave, Adam and the mom invite them in. When they are leaving, they decide to steal some of the woman's Christmas decorations, and back at the store Amy's co-workers finally admit that she is crazy.

Through the rest of the episode, Jonah and Garrett have passive-aggressive arguments about issues they have with living with the other, and Glenn tries to get Mateo into the Christmas spirit. Both of these stories are amusing, but not much beyond that. At the end of the episode, Jonah leaves with the newer female employee, and Glenn impresses Mateo with a light display, though he refuses to admit he's impressed.

While there were quite a few funny moments, and Amy's story worked well, in the end the episode didn't really feel that satisfying, and the side plots were much less entertaining than the main one, which made the scenes somewhat drag. But, I did like Jonah's romantic interest story progressing, and I liked the ending of the episode where Sandra took one of the motorized carts.

Score: 7/10

Superstore S3E6 Review

In the fall finale of Superstore, health is the issue, with Mateo having an ear infection and Glenn having a potentially concerning mole.

S3E6 "Health Fund"

After Mateo gets an ear infection, Jonah tries to put together a health fund for the employees of Cloud 9. Amy doubts that this will work, and her sarcasm is very funny. Jonah presents the idea to the rest, and, after some initial doubt as to whether socialism leads to fjords or the government watching people on the toilet, the decide that they like the idea.

Amy feels like she deserves some of the credit, and it's hilarious as she tries to get it. Jonah lets Amy take some credit, only to reveal to her that the health fund is failing. It's very funny as they try to solve the heath fund, as everyone gets mad at them, and it gets more complicated. In the end, the health fund ends up being a total failure, acknowledging the complicated nature of healthcare.

Glenn is worried about a mole he has on his penis. When he can't get a dermatologist appointment for six months, he goes elsewhere to try to find out if it's serious. It's hilarious when he tries to hide his computer screen from Garrett, and when he goes to the pharmacist, who shows Glenn his penis to make him more comfortable.

He recruits Dina to help him, and there are many funny moments here, as Glenn is very uncomfortable with this whole situation. In the end, it turns out that the mole is nothing, but Dina reminds Glenn that she now has a picture of his penis, which is a very Dina thing to do.

This was a very funny episode, though it took a little bit for it to get that funny, as the first few minutes weren't as strong. I also liked the fact that the episode had a unifying theme of health.

Score: 9.5/10

Superstore S3E5 Review

Halloween has returned to Cloud 9 (which includes Dina's popular police officer costume), and this year it comes with a murder mystery.

S3E5 "Sal's Dead"

At the start of the episode, a dead body is found, which is quite the start. It's funny when everyone realizes that they don't care when they find out that it's creepy Sal who died. I don't understand, however, how the body could have been in the walls of the store for a year when a tornado destroyed the store a few months earlier.

Glenn tries to keep customers from seeing the dead body before the coroner gets there, but he is very unsuccessful in doing so, and the coroner is taking a while (there is a very funny part where Dina talks to the coroner over the phone). Dina mistakenly thinks that a customer dressed up as a coroner is the coroner, which leads to some funny dialogue.

Amy, criticizing dating apps, takes a look at one on Jonah's phone, and hilariously treats it like a game. She accidentally swipes right on the new Cloud 9 employee, and it's great when her and Garrett try to figure out how they are supposed to resolve this.

Amy is awkward around the two, which is entertaining, and it's very funny when she sends a message as Jonah and then reasons that they might not run into each other in the store because there are dozens of aisles. Amy keeps texting as Jonah, and it gets worse, which is very funny. Jonah and her end up talking, and they fool Amy. It was a nice way to wrap up the story, not letting it get too out-of-hand.

Mateo wants to go to a wedding that's out of the country, but can't because he's undocumented. Cheyenne comes up with a solution, and makes him look like Sal. His behavior, however, then becomes like Sal's, which is very funny. Nico Santos does a great job here, this is a stand-out episode for him.

This was the best Superstore episode so far this season. Once again, the show did a great job with Halloween, with this episode having three great stories.

Score: 10/10

Superstore S3E4 Review

An attempted robbery is the cause of what goes on in Cloud 9 this week on Superstore.

S3E4 "Workplace Bullying"

The episode begins with a hilarious robbery. Jonah attempts to get the guy to stop by talking to him, but he doesn't. Dina, of course, is successful in stopping him. Jonah hilariously tries to defend his lack of action, saying that the robber sets the tone. Jeff, however, tells the employees that Jonah behaved correctly in this situation and Dina didn't, which leads to Dina harassing Jonah more. After Jonah brings this up to Jeff, he gives another talk, this one about bullying.

Dina is very angry that she has been written up, and as a result she ends up challenging Jonah to a fight. In the fight, Jonah ends up getting a boner. This is a bizarre ending to the story. It's hilarious through the story though when everyone brings up "what if"s and such when Jeff talks to the staff, especially when it is ignited by a Hitler question. These scenes are always strong moments for Superstore.

Amy tries to organize a buddy system for safety reasons, and because of this she discovers that many of her co-workers participate in a trivia night. As a result, Amy tries to prove that she would be useful at trivia night. When she still isn't invited, she tries to form her own group, but when it starts to seem lame, she makes up an excuse, which is really funny.

Amy finally confronts Mateo and Cheyenne about this, and she discovers they didn't invite her because they thought she didn't want to go. She gets invited, and the ironic ending here is that it's later than she would like, so she goes, but doesn't really want to. There's also a funny moment at the end where Amy abandons Sandra, though I feel like Amy would actually care about Sandra more than that.

Garrett makes Glenn realize that he needs to fire their useless security guard. He has a hard time doing so, which is entertaining. However, it turns out that the security guard didn't realize that Glenn is firing him, and after another attempt, he gets Glenn to move him to sales. This was an enjoyable story, but it didn't really go anywhere.

This was easily the strongest episode of the season so far. Each story was strong, even though the ending of Jonah and Dina's story wasn't my favorite, and Glenn's story didn't actually go anywhere.

Score: 9/10

Superstore S3E3 Review

Amy has to multitask in this week's episode, both doing her job and being a mother, when her daughter gets a part-time job at Cloud 9.

S3E3 "Part-Time Hires"

The episode begins with the Cloud 9 employees welcoming Amy's daughter Emma to the staff. It's funny when Glenn reveals that he keeps copies of all of the photos that employees develop at Cloud 9, and when the other new employee gets completely forgotten. Jonah observes that Amy is tough on her daughter, which he points out might end up leading to her liking her dad better. Amy struggles to balance her instincts of being hard on Emma, and not wanting Emma to like her dad more than her.

It's hilarious when Amy tries to get other people to yell at her daughter instead of her, so that her daughter does the right thing but she's still the fun mom. Amy asks Glenn if he thinks that anything is wrong with Emma, and he makes her realize: she's just being a teenager. This is a nice and fitting ending to this story. This story had some solid funny moments, and my favorite line of the episode was when Amy responds to a question that Jonah has with "I'm not on a panel, this is not Ask a Latina."

Amy's story really gets a lot of the focus this week, but there is still more going on. Mateo is flirting with a construction worker, but Cheyenne points out that he might be just doing it to borrow Mateo's employee badge to use the employee bathroom. Mateo trying to impress him is funny, but nothing very original. Dina shares that she broke up with Garrett, and Garrett doesn't like that being the story going around. Garrett ends up going too far and announcing to everyone that Dina is going to therapy, so she gets back at him by getting back together with him and then dumping him.

The main story was strong, with a good amount of funny moments and a nice resolution. The secondary stories weren't as strong, though there were some funny moments with Mateo and Cheyenne.

Score: 7/10
