Thursday TV Ratings 5/20/21: Last Man Standing Rises for Series Finale, Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime Stable, Grey’s Anatomy Hits Series Low (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: Amassing a total of 194 episodes and 9 seasons overall, Tim Allen sitcom 'Last Man Standing' (0.4) rose a tenth for its series finale. While serving as an improvement over the last three outings, this rating fell short of season-high territory and was lower than episodes from just a few months earlier. Although it'd have been foolish to expect 'Last Man' to soar into the 1.0 range for its last hurrah, it is disappointing that a program that aired for nearly a full decade would go out with such a whimper. Earlier in the night, Fox's puppet show 'Let's Be Real' (0.2) had a finale of its own, remaining steady at that pathetic number behind a 'Family Guy' encore. On ABC, 'Station 19' (0.7) lost a tenth while 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.8) shed a tenth-and-a-half. Canceled drama 'Rebel' (0.4) ticked up after having a repeat lead-in last week. Serving as the lone original on an island of reruns, CBS's 'United States of AI' (0.4) dropped by two-tenths and hit a new low. NBC was stable across the board with struggling 'Manifest' (0.4) and solid helpings of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.7) and 'Organized Crime' (0.7). 'Walker' (0.2) gained a tenth on the CW as 'Legacies' (0.1) held even.

Finals Update: 'Station 19' (0.8, +0.1) and 'United States of Al '(0.5, +0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 5/13/21: Mom Rises for Series Finale, Manifest and Rebel Eye Series Lows, Law & Order: Organized Crime Rises for SVU Crossover (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: CBS's long-running sitcom 'Mom' (0.7) ended its 8-season stint in respectable fashion. The Allison Janney comedy rose a tenth from last week and found itself smack-dab in season high territory. The 'Young Sheldon' season finale (0.7) and 'United States of AI (0.6) each ticked up, but the 'B Positive' finale (0.5) and 'Clarice' (0.3) failed to make any gains. On NBC, 'Manifest (0.4) fell to its lowest rating yet, losing a tenth on a week-to-week basis. 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.7) lost a tenth as 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.7) managed to gain one at 10. ABC's 'Rebel' (0.3) crashed to a series low, the Katey Sagal drama had much less lead-in support than usual since 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.4/0.4) went into repeat-mode. 'Last Man Standing' (0.3) and 'Let's Be Real' (0.2) were unchanged on Fox, with 'Last Man' airing its last episode before next week's series finale. 'Walker' (0.1) and 'Legacies' (0.1) also matched their previous showings on the CW.

Finals Update: 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.8, +0.1), the 'B Positive' finale (0.6, +0.1), a repeat of 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.5, +0.1), 'Last Man Standing' (0.4, +0.1), and 'Rebel' (0.4, +0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 5/6/21: Grey’s Anatomy Rises from Previous Preliminary Rating, Mom and B Positive Beat Young Sheldon and United States of Al, Rebel Ticks Up (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC remained in relatively strong shape as both 'Station 19' (0.7) and 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.9) held even. Struggling newbie 'Rebel' (0.5) even gained a tenth in the 10pm slot. CBS had a rough night in comparison, with 'Young Sheldon' (0.5) losing two-tenths and 'United States of AI' (0.4) shedding a tenth. Prospects brightened at 9 as 'Mom' (0.6) rose a tenth for its penultimate episode and 'B Positive' (0.5) inched up as well. 'Clarice' was frozen at a 0.3 rating at 10. NBC's double-pump of 'Manifest' (0.5/0.5) matched last week and led into another 'SVU' encore (0.4). Fox's feeble comedy duo of 'Last Man Standing' (0.3) and 'Let's Be Real' (0.2) held onto their poor week-ago ratings. They were preceded by a rerun of 'Name That Tune' (0.3). 'Walker' (0.1) inched down on the CW but 'Legacies' (0.1) tied its previous installment.

Finals Update: Station 19 (+0.1), Grey's Anatomy (+0.1), Young Sheldon (+0.1) and United States of Al (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 4/29/21: Let’s Be Real Bombs Behind Dropping Last Man Standing, Weaker NFL Draft Dominates, Manifest, Mom & B Positive Also Slip (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC traded out its drama trio for the '2021 NFL Draft' (1.0) and got slightly stronger ratings than usual. Despite that, the draft was four-tenths below the previous edition from 2020 (1.4). On CBS, 'Young Sheldon' (0.7) held even but 'United States of AI' (0.5), 'Mom' (0.5), and 'B Positive' (0.4) all lost a tenth. A repeat of 'Clarice' (0.2) clogged the 10pm slot once more. NBC's 'Manifest' (0.4/0.4) dropped to a new season low for a two-hour episode, leading into an encore of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.3). Fox had an absolutely horrific night with 'Hell's Kitchen' out of the picture. Following a repeat of 'Name That Tune' (0.2), 'Last Man Standing' (0.3) fell to a brutal series low. At 9:30, the return of puppet comedy 'Let's Be Real' (0.2) bombed out the gate, 50% below the last time it aired (0.4) and even behind last week's installment of 'The Moodys' (0.34). The CW aired two royal-themed specials, 'William & Kate's Royal Anniversary' (0.1) and 'Harry & Meghan's American Dream' (0.1). Few tuned in to watch but those low ratings should definitely excite Piers Morgan.

Finals Update: 'NFL Draft' (+0.1) and both episodes of 'Manifest' (+0.1 each) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 3/25/21: Superstore Rises for Series Finale, Call Me Kat Slips for Finale, Greys Anatomy and Station 19 Tick Down (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: Cloud 9 permanently shut down last night, with the series finale of NBC sitcom 'Superstore' (0.5/0.5) tying its week-ago rating for an hour-long farewell. Compared to recent NBC series finales, 'The Good Place (0.7) had a minor uptick while 'Will & Grace' (0.5) actually lost a tenth. Although 'Superstore' limped to the finish line this past season, the series deservers major praise for consistently garnering strong numbers for the five years prior. A repeat of 'SVU' (0.4) and a steady 'Dateline' (0.4) closed out a quiet evening for the peacock network. On ABC, 'Station 19' (0.7) and 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.9) shed a tenth apiece, but 'A Million Little Things' clung to last week's 0.5 rating in the 10pm slot. Fox's 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.8) remained in season high territory, but the 'Call Me Kat' finale (0.5) and 'Last Man Standing' (0.4) lost a tick. While a decline on finale night doesn't bode well for 'Kat', it did manage to avoid matching its low or creating a new one. CBS had encores of 'Young Sheldon' (0.4), 'B Positive' (0.4), 'Mom' (0.4), 'Bob Hearts Abishola' (0.3), and 'Clarice' (0.2). The CW had a 'Harry & Meghan' special (0.1) that couldn't hold a candle to their Oprah interview from early March. The royal dud was followed by a stable 'Legacies' (0.1).

Finals Update: Superstore at 8 PM (+0.1), Last Man Standing (+0.1) and Station 19 (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of Mom (-0.1) adjusted down.

Thursday TV Ratings 3/18/21: The Unicorn Ends Down, Hell’s Kitchen, Call Me Kat and Last Man Standing Rise, Grey’s Anatomy Steady Behind Down Station 19 (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC began their night in rough fashion as 'Station 19' (0.7) lost two-tenths from its week-ago return. 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.9) held steady from there while 'A Million Little Things' (0.5) managed to pick up a tenth. Fox had a surprisingly strong evening as 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.8) and 'Call Me Kat' (0.6) each rose by two-tenths, both shows reaching heights they haven't seen since January. This resurgence comes just a week after they fell to nasty, new lows (0.6/0.4). 'Last Man Standing' (0.5) inched up at the end of the lineup. On NBC, 'Superstore' (0.4) perked up slightly after its awful performance from last week (0.35), with its series finale right around the corner. The seasoned comedy was followed by a repeat of itself (0.3), an 'SVU' encore (0.3), and a rising 'Dateline' (0.4). After being preempted last week, CBS's 'The Unicorn' (0.4/0.4) closed out its second season with a one-hour finale. The struggling sitcom shed two-tenths from its previous installment but was able to avoid hitting a new low. 'Unicorn' was surrounded by reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.5/0.5) and 'Clarice' (0.2). 'Walker' (0.3) gained a tenth on the CW as 'Legacies' (0.1) remained even.

Finals Update: Station 19 (+0.1), Grey's Anatomy (+0.1) and Superstore (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 2/4/21: Call Me Kat and Mr. Mayor Tick Down, Steady Hell’s Kitchen On Top (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: With 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (0.5/0.3/0.3) in repeat-mode on ABC, Fox's 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.7) was free to take the leader position. The Gordon Ramsay staple matched its previous installment and outpaced all other telecasts. But the news was less sunny for the Fox network at 9 as sitcom 'Call Me Kat' (0.5) lost a tenth and tied its low-point. 'Last Man Standing' remained frozen at 0.4 in the 9:30 slot. Despite the alphabet network's absence from originals, NBC struggled to make much ratings noise as 'Mr. Mayor' (0.5) inched down at 8 and 'Dateline' (0.3) shed two-tenths at 10. 'Superstore' (0.4) held steady in the middle and led into another 'SVU' encore (0.3). CBS had another round of comedy reruns in the form of 'Young Sheldon' (0.5), 'B Positive' (0.4), and 'Mom' (0.4). A new episode of 'The Unicorn' (0.4) improved slightly from last week's meager performance (0.35) while the 'Stark Trek: Discovery' finale (0.2) didn't budge at 10. On the CW, 'Walker' (0.3) and 'Legacies' (0.2) garnered the same ratings they did a week ago.

Finals Update: Superstore (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 1/28/21: The Unicorn Hits New Low Behind Repeats, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and The Chase Decline, Mr. Mayor Rises (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC's Thursday-night lead was more subdued than usual as 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (0.8) and 'The Chase' (0.6) both shed a tenth from last week. 'The Hustler' (0.5) clung to its week-ago rating in the 10pm slot. NBC was steady with 'Mr. Mayor' (0.5) and 'Superstore' (0.4) but 'Dateline' (0.5) actually rose two-tenths despite its 'SVU' lead-in (0.4) being in repeat-mode. Fox was flat with a sturdy 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.7), a solid 'Call Me Kat' (0.6), and a struggling 'Last Man Standing' (0.4). On CBS, 'The Unicorn' (0.3) crashed to a new low leading out of a 'Mom' repeat (0.3). 'Young Sheldon' encores (0.5/0.4) bested the Walton Goggins comedy while 'Star Trek: Discovery' (0.2) remained anemic at 10. The CW's 'Walker' (0.3) inched down in week 2 while 'Legacies' (0.2) held even.

Finals Update: The Chase (+0.1), Mr. Mayor (+0.1),  The Unicorn (+0.1), and repeats of Law & Order: SVU (+0.1), Young Sheldon at 8:30 (+0.1) and Mom (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 1/14/21: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune Remains on Top but Sees Minor Slippage, Call Me Kat, The Chase and Mr. Mayor Also Dip (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC's Thursday lineup remained unchallenged despite 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (1.1) losing a tenth, 'The Chase' (0.8) shedding two, and 'The Hustler' (0.6) inching down. 'Wheel' was once again the only program of the night to break the 1.0 threshold, with all other networks failing to rise higher than a 0.7 rating. On Fox, 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.7) lost a tenth from last week's premiere, as did 'Last Man Standing' (0.5) at 9:30. But 'Call Me Kat' (0.5) took a troubling two-tenth dip in the 9pm hour, potentially putting its chances of renewal in jeopardy. NBC's 'Mr Mayor' (0.5) only fell by one-tenth when compared to last week's 1-hour premiere (0.60/0.55). The Ted Danson sitcom led into the return of 'Superstore' (0.5). The longtime comedy held even as it begins to air out its final stretch of episodes. The peacock network closed the evening with a steady 'SVU' (0.6) and a rising 'Dateline' (0.4). CBS was once more in repeat-mode with 'Young Sheldon' (0.5), 'B Positive' (0.4), 'Mom' (0.3), 'The Unicorn' (0.3), and 'Star Trek: Discovery' (0.1). The CW had the finale of 'World's Funniest Animals' (0.1/0.1) and a 'Legacies' rerun (0.1).

Finals Update: 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (1.2, +0.1), 'The Chase' (0.9, +0.1), 'Call Me Kat' (0.6, +0.1), 'Young Sheldon' repeat (0.6, +0.1), 'Mom' repeat (0.4, +0.1), and 'Star Trek: Discovery' repeat (0.2, +0.1) all adjusted up.

Fox Renew/Cancel #5: ’Call Me Kat’ Begins as a Likely Renewal

Predictions for 1/11/21

Below are the latest renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network. Three shows have entered the table since the last update, one longtime veteran and two fresh faces. Another series receives a downgrade due to an upcoming timeslot change.

Call Me Kat: Fox has put 'Call Me Kat' in a very solid position to succeed, first giving it a direct NFL lead-in for its series premiere and then placing it in the 9pm anchor slot on Thursday nights. Previous 'Last Man Standing' companions aired at the bottom of the hour but Fox seems confident enough in 'Kat' to grant it the more prestigious spot. For the time being, 'Call Me Kat' has appeared to live up to the network's expectations. The Mayim Bialik vehicle garnered a respectable 1.4 A18-49 rating for its Sunday debut, retaining more than 50% of its football lead-in (2.6). Half that audience departed for its Thursday installment but the 0.7 rating that 'Kat' posted is still nothing to scoff at. To put things into perspective, a 0.66 rating is the highest that 'The Simpsons' has gone this season without NFL help, slightly lower than the 0.68 that Bialik's program posted. With 'Last Man Standing' on its way out, Fox likely wants to keep at least one live-action comedy on its roster. Luckily for them, 'Call Me Kat' is currently doing well enough to get by. Another season looks to be in the cards for this freshman sitcom. Status: LIKELY RENEWAL

Bless the Harts: 'Harts' was slated to air an episode on January 3rd, but Fox ended up booting it off the schedule in favor of a 'Great North' preview. That essentially sums up why 'Bless the Harts' has been downgraded from 'Likely Renewal' to 'Likely to be Canceled'. At first, it seemed like 'Harts' could coast to a third season despite feeble ratings and dreadful retention. But, it appears Fox will be airing the remaining episodes in the unfavorable 7:30 slot and giving 'The Great North' the coveted post-'Simpsons' timeslot. On top of that, no reruns of 'Bless the Harts' will be airing during the January hiatus. All these signs point to the fact that the network has finally given up on Betty and friends. They have nurtured this cartoon since fall 2019 but ratings have only gotten worse and buzz has never materialized. Status: LIKELY CANCEL

Last Man Standing: After a tepid eight year, 'Last Man Standing' returned for its 9th and final season in particularly ugly fashion, hitting a new series low (0.5) last Sunday. Fortunately for 'Last Man', the bleeding stopped there as it inched up to a 0.6 rating for its timeslot debut on Thursday. 'Last Man Standing' had a strong run but it's clear that its best days are behind it, season nine feels like the perfect place to stop. At the very worst, this Tim Allen sitcom works as decent filler by taking up an undesirable slot and posting passable numbers. Status: ENDED

The Great North: This animated comedy was renewed long before it aired its first episode, debuting with an acceptable 0.7 A18-49 rating on Sunday, January 3rd. While it is currently unknown how 'Great North' will perform with a more compatible 'Simpsons' lead-in, its performance is essentially irrelevant given a second season has already been secured. Original episodes will return on February 14th. Status: RENEWED

Sitcom Scorecard - November 30, 2020-January 7, 2021

Welcome back to the Sitcom Scorecard after several weeks with little to talk about over the holidays.  Since last fall's slow, abysmal start, four more sitcoms entered into the arena.  FOX utilized what they anticipated as Football Inflation (and was tackled by low interest) to usher in new entries Call Me Kat and The Great North, as well as the final season debut of Last Man Standing.  The results?  Call Me Kat demonstrated a modest, sturdy start, The Great North is questionable, and Last Man Standing perhaps resigned at the proper time after 9 great seasons.  Call Me Kat earned a Likely Renewal prediction as it matches what competitor Mom received, and has great potential to take 2nd and 3rd in its timeslot after Grey's Anatomy returns.

NBC, giving the impression they are eyeing shuttering up Must-See-TV, used the 8pm block to showcase two episodes of new entry The Mayor, which performed in-line with tired former heavy hitters Superstore and Brooklyn 99.  Mr. Mayor so far is forecasted as a Likely Renewal on merit of NBC appears to have beat its curse of failed freshman comedies.  More performance will need to be leveraged especially as March onward can be brutal on scripted shows.  Next week  shall see more returning sitcoms as well as ABC unleashing Call Your Mother, and the reporting resumes as usual.

A stray thought: many sitcoms have the world "Call" in the title.  What is next?  "Your Call Girl?" "Call The Ratings Dead?"

The January debuts are exciting, as not only there is something to watch again.  But the 2020-21 television season will not match or create a record-low sitcom count.  With 20 sitcoms in circulation (and another 7 anticipated), the season will dodge the dismal 1972-73 television season which only featured 20 sitcoms (read about that HERE).  The 70's were known for being dismal and dull, with NBC in freefall and CBS' Tiffany standard began to tarnish despite holding the winning sitcoms.  Another period of time less favorable for sitcoms was the 2000's as Reality TV invaded like a weed.  2009-10 withered down to 23 entries, another low bar thankfully this season will clear.

Thursday TV Ratings 1/7/21: Mr. Mayor and Call Me Kat Have Decent Starts, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and The Chase Premiere Strong (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: On a night full of returns and premieres, ABC managed to top the night with the debut of 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (1.1). Although 'Wheel' was well behind where 'Jeopardy! The Greatest of All-Time' (2.4) began last January, it was the only show of the night to cross the 1.0 rating threshold. Hosted by 'Jeopardy' alumni, 'The Chase' (0.9) got off to a stellar start right after, retaining more than 80% of the audience that came before it. But the real surprise came at 10pm when 'The Hustler' (0.7) grew two-tenths from Monday's lackluster preview. Over on NBC, Ted Danson comedy 'Mr. Mayor' (0.6/0.5) opened in acceptable territory for its 1-hour premiere. While it was on-par with recent installments of 'Superstore', it will have to avoid falling any further to strengthen its chances of renewal. 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.6) held even with its fall finale in the 9pm hour and led into a low-rated installment of 'Dateline' (0.3).

Fox's 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.7) returned for a new season after nearly two years off the air, two-tenths below its previous season debut (0.9) in September 2018 but only a tenth lower than its February 2019 finale (0.8). The Gordon Ramsay staple led into the timeslot debuts of 'Call Me Kat' (0.6) and 'Last Man Standing' (0.5). 'Kat' shed eight-tenths from Sunday's NFL-boosted premiere (1.4) while 'Last Man' was able to tie its Sunday return. CBS went with repeats of 'Young Sheldon' (0.6), 'B Positive' (0.4), 'Mom' (0.4), 'The Unicorn' (0.3), and 'Star Trek: Discovery' (0.2). Many of these encores came within a tenth of the last original episodes these programs aired. The CW had an iHeartRadio Music Festival' (0.1) but forgot to send out the invitations.

Finals Update: 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (1.2, +0.1), 'Hell's Kitchen' (0.8, +0.1), 'The Chase' (1.0, +0.1), 'Call Me Kat' (0.7, +0.1), and 'Last Man Standing' (0.6, +0.1) all adjusted up.

Sunday TV Ratings 1/3/21: Call Me Kat Has Decent Start Behind Weaker NFL Lead-In as The Great North Struggles, The Rookie Rises from Millionaire, Last Man Standing Returns with New Low (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: Fox began the new year with an odd mismatch of live-action and animated comedies. The series premiere of 'Call Me Kat' (1.3) received the direct post-NFL timeslot and got off to a fairly strong start. Despite 'NFL Overrun' (3.3) and 'The OT' (1.9) underwhelming, 'Kat' retained nearly 70% of its football lead-in. While it's hard to imagine that 'Kat' will take more than half of this audience to its Thursday evening home, the sitcom was sampled rather nicely. But the good news stopped there for Fox as the premiere of animated series 'The Great North' (0.6) completely tanked, shedding well over half of its lead-in. 'Great North' won't return until February 14th but this premiere probably doesn't gives Fox much confidence for its future. A special edition of 'Simpsons' (0.5) performed poorly in the 9pm hour, as did the final season premiere of 'Last Man Standing' (0.5) at 9:30. 'Last Man' was five-tenths below 2020's start and an alarming 72% behind its fall 2018 premiere.

NBC remained the Sunday leader with 'Football Night in America' (1.5/3.4) and the 'WA v. Eagles' NFL game (3.8). ABC was steady with 'AFV' (0.6) and the 'Supermarket Sweep' finale (0.5) but 'Millionaire' (0.4) picked up a tenth at 9. The alphabet network closed out the night with the season premiere of 'The Rookie' (0.5), the drama built from its lead-in but was two-tenths behind last season's start. '60 Minutes' (0.9) gained three-tenths on CBS with the help of 'NFL Overrun' (2.3). That was no help for 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.5) which inched down from its previous outing. 'New Orleans' (0.4) held even at 10. The CW's 'The Outpost' (0.1) gained a tenth while leading out of a 'Penn & Teller' repeat (0.1).

Finals Update: 'NFL Overrun' on Fox (+2.7), 'The OT' (+0.7), 'Call Me Kat' (+0.1), 'The Great North' (+0.1), 'The Simpsons' (+0.1), 'NFL Overrun' on CBS (+1.1), '60 Minutes' (+0.3), 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (+0.1), 'NCIS: New Orleans' (+0.1), 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire' (+0.1), and 'NFL: Washington v. Eagles' (+0.8) adjusted up.

Last Man Standing Ending with Season 9

After what will be nine seasons on the air, including six on ABC and three on Fox, Mike Baxter and the folks of Outdoor Man will sign off for good after its upcoming season. The show was a solid player for ABC before its cancellation due to high costs, and was revived by Fox a year later. Initially a blockbuster performer for Fox on Fridays, ratings eroded upon a move to Thursdays, though the show remained a respectable performer. In its eight seasons thus far, the show aired 173 episodes, and will have just shy of 200 by the time it wraps season nine. This will make it among the longest-running live-action comedies of all-time upon its ending. Last Man Standing stars Tim Allen in a lead role, alongside Nancy Travis, Hector Elizondo, Amanda Fuller, Jordan Masterson, Christoph Sanders and Jonathan Adams.

Last Man Standing Renewed by Fox

The return of Last Man Standing will last a little longer. Fox has ordered a third season of the revival, the ninth season overall for the one-time ABC series. Despite a big start in 2018, the show has been a more modest player since its move to Thursdays this season. It has averaged 0.74 this season, slightly lower than the league average but enough to put it smack dab in the middle of Fox's scripted lineup. It was the highest-rated part of the winter Thursday lineup, out-rating the freshman comedy Outmatched and the quickly-canceled Deputy. Tim Allen leads the cast, which also includes Nancy Travis, Amanda Fuller, Molly McCook, Hector Elizondo, Jordan Masterson, Jonathan Adams and Christoph Sanders. This was a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Thursday TV Ratings 4/30/20: Parks & Rec Special Strong, Council of Dads Premiere Embarrassing, Moving Millionaire and Young Sheldon Finale Rise (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: In a stunning turn of events, NBC's 'Parks & Recreation' reunion special (1.4) demolished the competition and was the top program of the night. This number would have been a high-end result for its 6th OR 7th season, with the 6th averaging a 1.16 A18-49 rating & the 7th a 1.33. It also tied the second-half of its series finale all the way back in 2015. The broadcast led out of a Paley Salute of itself (1.0), the latter was still strong enough to beat out all NBC comedy ratings from the 2019-20 television season. Unfortunately, that lead-in juice was wasted on a 'Council of Dads' repeat (0.4) at 9 and an original 'Council' (0.3) at 10. The drama fell four-tenths from an already feeble opener.

The added comedy competition didn't seem to phase the season three finale of 'Young Sheldon' (1.1). The CBS sitcom ticked up from its last episode but still trailed its year-ago closer (2.1). The 'Big Bang' spinoff led into a full hour of 'Man with a Plan' (0.7/0.7) & steady showings of 'Broke' (0.6) and 'Tommy' (0.5). ABC rescued 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' by taking it out of the dreadful 10pm slot and placing it on Thursdays at 8. Their efforts paid off as the 0.8 rating it posted was three-tenths above its last episode and above all its showings aside from the 'Modern Family'-boosted debut (1.1). It led into 'Station 19' (0.9) which shed three-tenths and tied its season low. The alphabet network capped off the night with an even 'How To Get Away with Murder' (0.6). 'Last Man Standing' (0.7) quietly closed out its eighth season on Fox. While steady on a week-to-week basis, it was two-tenths below its season seven finale (0.9). The CW had stable 'Katy Keene' (0.1) and 'In the Dark' (0.1).

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary ratings.

There are no changes in renewal odds to discuss this week.  Just disappointments.  Will & Grace bowed out with an appalling 0.5 rating after considerable press overage.  While it maintained for the season, this is a far cry from the monumental 8.4 rating it achieved for its first finale in 2006 (to check out the seasonal ratings for Will & Grace's first run as well as other shows, click on the RATINGS HISTORY database and have a fun read!).  Other disappointments to shamefully mention include Last Man Standing belting out another low 0.6 rating and American Housewife delivering the same in Modern Family's old stomping grounds.

With so few shows left with shorter seasons, coverage and discussion is getting scarce.  However, some factors have already been determined, including The Conners, Young Sheldon and Modern Family will finish the season in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively.  Hit show The Simpsons is already showing its true weight in springtime and this week and slid down from its inflated 2nd place.  One more 0.6 rating, and it's going to 4th.  CBS' springtime entries Broke and Man With a Plan tried out another week without veteran support and ticked down to 0.6.  The odds are promising for Broke, while Man With a Plan faces a similar curse as Life in Pieces which CBS axed at 79 episodes in its 4th year.  If Man With a Plan finishes 13 episodes this season, it stands at 69 episodes.  MWAP was used in prior seasons to plug the holes on Mondays, but Bobishola's impressive results leave it to crowded Thursdays.  That leaves it competing with fresher Broke, Carol's Second Act and The Unicorn.

Returning veterans are also tougher to determine in the current television world.  Last Man Standing delivered a triumphant 7th season after being revived on FOX last year, and is struggling on Thursdays as an afterthought.  Could this be the last season?  And American Housewife's Wednesday move(s) are proving disappointing.  But what other options does ABC have?  And would they part with outsourced The Goldbergs?  A network cancelling its 2nd highest sitcom remaining would have been unheard of three years ago, but could become a reality in 2020.

Recently, TVRG has been delivering a new series of articles titled Every Episode, Every Rating.  This series has every episode's demo ratings filed into a table with analysis.  More are slated to come throughout 2020, so stay tuned.  Current entries on the sitcoms mentioned in this table:

Thursday TV Ratings, 4/23/20: ’Will & Grace’ Drops For Final Episode, ’NFL Draft’ Leads

Here are the final broadcast ratings for Thursday, April 23, 2020.

Preliminary Analysis: NBC's 'Will & Grace' (0.5) bowed out for the second time on NBC, down a tenth from last week. Although leagues below its original 2006 series finale (8.4), it at least managed not to hit a new low. It led into a 9:30pm retrospective (0.5) and the 21st season finale of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.7). 'SVU' was even week-to-week and with its year-ago finale. There was brighter news in the 8pm hour as both 'Superstore' (0.7) and 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' (0.6) were steady with last week and both up a notch from their year-ago closers (0.6 & 0.5).

ABC preempted their regular Thursday lineup in favor of the 'NFL Draft' (1.6). It effortlessly trumped last year's result (1.1) and was well above what a normal 'Station 19' would do.

CBS's 'Man with a Plan' (0.6) and 'Broke' (0.6) each lost a tenth as their lead-ins (0.6/0.6) went into repeat mode. Fox's 'Last Man Standing' (0.6) held steady at its low, leading into more encores (0.5/0.3). The CW had another helping of 0.1s with stable 'Katy Keene' and 'In the Dark'.

Finals Update: The 'NFL Draft' (1.4, -0.2) adjusted down while 'Man with a Plan' (0.7, +0.1) and 'Last Man Standing' (0.7, +0.1) adjusted up.
