Wednesday TV Ratings 8/5/20: Big Brother Returns In Solid Fashion, United We Fall Steady, Coroner Premiere Grows from The 100 in Viewers (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: For the first time since 'The Masked Singer' left the airwaves, Wednesday nights perked up a bit thanks to the return of CBS's 'Big Brother' (1.0). It was a decent return for the longtime staple, down just three-tenths from its June 2019 premiere (1.3) and only behind NBC's 'America's Got Talent' as far as summer 2020 broadcast programming goes. But the significantly stronger lead-out had no effect on 'Tough As Nails' (0.5), the reality series held even at 8pm. While overshadowed by the return of the juggernaut, ABC's 'United We Fall' (0.5) held even in week three and bested every non-CBS program. 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) was also even at 10pm for its penultimate episode. Comedy repeats (0.4/0.3/0.3) populated the slots in-between. NBC had a semi-decent 'One Chicago' lineup (0.3/0.3/0.4) but fell behind Fox's 'MasterChef' encore (0.4). The CW's 'The 100' (0.1) shed a tenth and led into the low-rated series premiere of 'Coroner' (0.1).

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary ratings.

Wednesday TV Ratings 7/29/20: Ultimate Tag Ends Higher, Tough As Nails Ties United We Fall in First, Agents of SHIELD Steady (UPDATED)

Note: Original broadcasts are highlighted in BLUE.

Preliminary Analysis: After a promising 1.3 debut after 'The Masked Singer' in late May, Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (0.3) ended its ten-episode run in truly ghastly fashion. The competition series matched the ugly low-point it had posted the past two weeks and fell behind its 'MasterChef' repeat lead-in (0.4) once again. Although its steady stream of ratings in the 0.5-0.6 range was quite solid, this sour final impression definitely jeopardizes the program's chances of returning for a second season.

In more encouraging news, ABC's 'United We Fall' (0.5) held even in week three and tied for the night's top broadcast. Although chances of renewal are slim, 'Fall' seems to be doing quite well for the time being. But there was uglier news later in the night as 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.2) lost a tenth and fell back down to its rotten series low at 10pm. 'SHIELD' will air its two-hour series finale in two weeks on August 12th. Sandwiched in-between the two originals were repeats of 'The Goldbergs' (0.4), 'The Conners' (0.3), and 'American Housewife' (0.3).

CBS's 'Tough as Nails' (0.5) got a precious tenth back after two weeks of posting 0.4s. It led into encores of a 'Price Is Right' special (0.4) and 'SEAL Team' (0.3). NBC had 0.4s across the board for its 'One Chicago' repeat trio. And the CW's 'Bulletproof' (0.1) gained a tenth after last week's dreadful 0.0. It led out of a repeat of 'The 100' (0.1).

(R) = repeat
(F) = finale

Finals Update: The season finale of Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (+0.1) and 'Agents of SHIELD' (+0.1) adjusted up. This puts 'Ultimate Tag a tenth above its last episode and 'SHIELD' steady with its previous outing.

Wednesday TV Ratings 7/22/20: Game On! Ends Steady, United We Fall Stays on Top, Bulletproof Gets Invisible (UPDATED)

Note: Titles highlighted in BLUE are original broadcasts.

Preliminary Analysis: A week after its decent debut, ABC's 'United We Fall' (0.5) was down a tenth from its 8pm premiere but steady with its previous episode. By current bleak summer standards, this is ultimately a passable performance and 'Fall' was simultaneously the highest-rated program of the night. 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) closed out the alphabet network's night. Coulson and company were once more even week-to-week. In-between the originals were repeats of 'The Goldbergs' (0.4), 'The Conners' (0.4), and 'American Housewife' (0.3).

CBS's lineup remained anemic as 'Tough as Nails' (0.4) and 'Game On' (0.3) matched their awful performances from last week. A 10pm 'SEAL Team' repeat (0.3) matched the 'Game On' finale. NBC's 'One Chicago' lineup (0.4/0.4) was on-par with its usual delivery. Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (0.3) remained feeble, once more falling behind its 'MasterChef' repeat lead-in (0.4). And The CW's 'Bulletproof' (0.0) lost a tenth, falling to that horrific 0.0 that has become increasingly more common for the netlet this summer. A repeat of 'The 100' (0.1) lead into it.

Finals update: Repeats of Chicago Med (-0.1) and MasterChef (-0.1) adjusted down.

Wednesday TV Ratings 7/15/20: United We Fall Starts On Top, Game On! and Ultimate Tag Hit New Lows (UPDATED)

Note: Titles highlighted in BLUE are original broadcasts.

Preliminary Anaylsis: After weeks of comedy reruns and Disney films populating the Wednesday night roster, ABC decided to return to the scripted original game by broadcasting the 1-hour premiere of new sitcom 'United We Fall' (0.6/0.5). It was a respectable start by summer standards and 'Fall' also narrowly registered as the night's top program. Despite that, it has very little room to drop before it goes from solid to underwhelming. At 10, 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) held steady once more. In-between the two originals were repeats of 'The Conners' (0.4) and 'American Housewife' (0.3).

CBS's 'Tough as Nails' (0.5) lost a tenth in week 2 but the real slippage came with the return of 'Game On!' (0.3) in a new timeslot. Not only did 'Game On!' lose three-tenths and fall to a new series low but it also lost two-tenths from an already tepid lead-in. An even uglier 'SEAL Team' repeat (0.2) ended their evening. Similar to 'Game On!', Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (0.3) crashed to a new low and lost to its 'MasterChef' repeat lead-in (0.4) for the first time. 'Tag' had posted five-straight 0.5s before this rotten data point. NBC had 0.4s across the board with a trio of 'One Chicago' encores. The CW's 'The 100' (0.2) and 'Bulletproof' (0.1) were frozen at last week's numbers.

FINALS UPDATE: 'Tough as Nails' (0.4, -0.1) adjusted down, now down two-tenths from last week's premiere.

Wednesday TV Ratings 7/8/20: Tough As Nails Starts Decently, The 100 Rises (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: Wednesday night's main attraction was CBS's series debut of competition program 'Tough As Nails' (0.6). 'Nails' topped every other offering and matched last week's timeslot occupant 'Game On' (0.6). Barring a huge collapse, this is a relatively respectable level to be at. The 2-hour premiere led into a 10pm 'SEAL Team' repeat (0.4). ABC's 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) held even once more and led out of a slew of comedy repeats (0.5/0.4/0.3/0.3). NBC's 'One Chicago' repeat trio (0.4/0.3/0.4) was a touch weaker than usual. On Fox, 'Ultimate Tag' (0.5) held steady in its return and continued to grow from its 'MasterChef' repeat lead-in (0.4). 'The 100' (0.1) and 'Bulletproof' (0.1) held steady on the CW.

Finals Update: 'The 100' (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of 'Blackish' (-0.1) adjusted down.

Wednesday TV Ratings 7/1/20: Game On!, SHIELD and The 100 Rise from Lows, The Goldbergs Repeat Solid (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: In preparation for the fall season, ABC's Wednesday repeat lineup consisted of their upcoming roster, 'The Goldbergs' (0.5) / 'Black-ish' (0.4) / 'The Conners' (0.3) / 'American Housewife' (0.3). At 10, 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) inched up a tenth after last week's miserable new low point.

CBS's 'Game On!' (0.6) rose two-tenths after last episode's season low, topping the three other originals of the night. The 'SEAL Team' & 'SWAT' encores after it both managed 0.4s. NBC's 'One Chicago' encore lineup (0.4/0.4/0.4) remained in good-not-great territory. Fox preempted 'Ultimate Tag' and went with two 'MasterChef' repeats (0.4/0.4). The CW's 'The 100' (0.2) ticked up while 'Bulletproof' (0.1) remained even.

Finals Update: The 100 (-0.10 adjusted down.

Wednesday TV Ratings 6/24/20: The 100, Agents of SHIELD and Game On Drop to Lows, Ultimate Tag Leads Abysmal Night (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: On an incredibly quiet summer evening, CBS's 'Game On!' (0.4) lost two-tenths and fell to a new series low. Considering it was previously posting ratings in the 0.5-0.7 range, this is definitely a discouraging result for the freshman game show. The back-half of the night was populated by 'SEAL Team' (0.3) and 'SWAT' (0.3) encores. ABC opted not to air a Disney film, instead airing a rebroadcast of 'Taking the Stage' (0.4). It was on par with last week's 'Toy Story 3' but six-tenths below the first time it aired (1/12/17). 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) held even after the special, garnering its 5th-straight 0.3. NBC's 'One Chicago' repeats (0.4/0.4/0.4) were roughly steady with last week's encores. Fox was also even with an original 'Ultimate Tag' (0.4) that matched its 'MasterChef' (0.4) repeat lead-in. The CW was down a tenth with 'The 100' (0.1) but steady with 'Bulletproof' (0.1).

Finals Update: Ultimate Tag (+0.1) adjusted up. Agents of SHIELD (-0.1) adjusted down.

Wednesday TV Ratings 6/17/20: Toy Story 3 Low, Game On! Rises, SHIELD Steady (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC's presentation of the 2010 animated juggernaut 'Toy Story 3' (0.4) ended up being the lowest-rated of the Disney films the alphabet network has aired in the past month, going a tick below last week's 'Big Hero 6' (0.5). It was also three-tenths behind the last time it aired on ABC (5/23/18). The good news was that 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) held even at that same rating it has garnered all season-long.

'Game On' (0.6) inched up a tenth and was the top original program of the night by a wide margin. 'SEAL Team' (0.3) and 'SWAT' (0.3) encores wrapped up the night on CBS. NBC had another batch of 'One Chicago' repeats (0.5/0.4/0.4) that outperformed Fox's 'MasterChef' (0.3) encore and 'Ultimate Tag' (0.4). The latter fell a tenth from its last episode, marking a new series low. The CW's originals, 'The 100' (0.2) and 'Bulletproof' (0.1) held at last week's numbers.

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary ratings.

Wednesday TV Ratings 6/10/20: Agents of SHIELD Steady, Game On! Down (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: ABC continued showcasing their 'Wonderful World of Disney' brand by airing 2014 superhero film 'Big Hero 6' (0.5). The animated flick was steady with the last time it aired on ABC (8/5/17) and matched several other broadcasts for the top spot of the night. Despite all that, it was two-tenths below last week's showing of 'Up' (0.7). Baymax and company led into a steady 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3), the latter posting the same rating it has managed since its season debut.

CBS's 'Game On' (0.5) shed a tenth from last week and led into repeats of 'SEAL Team' (0.3) and 'SWAT' (0.4). 'Ultimate Tag' (0.5) was even on Fox, tying CBS's game show offering. It was preceded by a 'MasterChef' (0.4) encore. NBC had 0.5s across the board with 'One Chicago' repeats. The CW was frozen at last week's numbers with 'The 100' and 'Bulletproof'.

Finals Update: The repeat of SWAT (-0.1) adjusted down.

Wednesday TV Ratings 6/3/20: Up Rises from Thor, SHIELD Steady, Game On and Ultimate Tag Down (UPDATED)

On a relatively eventless Wednesday evening, ABC's presentation of the 2009 Pixar film 'Up' (0.7) took the top spot across all networks. This was two-tenths above last week's showing of 'Thor: The Dark World' (0.5) but even with 'Moana' (0.7) from two weeks ago, showing that airing more family-friendly fare is probably the way to go. The lead-in juice could not help 'Agents of SHIELD' (0.3) which clung onto last week's dismal premiere rating.

Elsewhere, CBS's 'Game On' (0.6) lost a tenth from last week's debut and lead into 'SEAL Team' (0.4) and 'SWAT' (0.3) repeats. The latter actually managed to tie the original 'SHIELD' head-on. Fox's 'Ultimate Tag' (0.6) matched last week's respectable timeslot premiere leading out of a slightly stronger 'MasterChef' (0.5) encore. NBC had 'One Chicago's repeats (0.4/0.4/0.5) and the CW had a steady 'The 100' (0.2) alongside another 'Bulletproof' (0.1) repeat.

Finals Update: Ultimate Tag (-0.1) and the repeat of MasterChef (-0.1) adjusted down.

Wednesday TV Ratings 5/27/20: OK Start for Game On!, SHIELD Returns Steady, Ultimate Tag Expectedly Plunges (UPDATED)

It was a quiet night across the networks, with few originals and seemingly even fewer viewers.

The premiere of Game On! topped the night for its series premiere, even with just a 0.6 for its start. The sports game show hosted by Keegan-Michael Key had 0.7/0.6 halves and became om in a long line of middling CBS reality debuts in the summer. We'll see where it goes from here. Beyond that, the Tiffany network had 0.3 repeats of its Wednesday shows from the previous season

ABC continued its Wonderful World of Disney movie broadcasts, this time showing Thor: The Dark World. It was notably weaker than last week's move, Moana, with a 0.5 vs. its 0.7. At 10, Agents of SHIELD returned for what will be its final season. With a 0.4, it as in-line with Tuesday's Genetic Detective launch.

Fox's Ultimate Tag collapsed in week two, which was far from unexpected. Its lead-in shrunk by nearly two ratings points, with a MasterChef repeat coming in at 0.4 vs Masked Singer's 2.3.

The CW marched onwards with a 0.2 for the second episode of the final season of The 100. A Bulletproof repeat hit a 0.1 once again.

NBC had Chicago repeats, all at 0.5.

Finals Update: Game On! (+0.1) adjusted down. Agents of SHIELD (-0.1) adjusted down.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD to End with Season 7

The end is in sight for ABC's long-running comic book series Agents of SHIELD, as the series has been confirmed to end with its upcoming 7th season. The show scored a (very) early renewal last year for the seventh season, over half a year before the show began its season 6 run on Fridays during summer. The show hasn't been a strong performer for the network for some time, and it didn't have a successful syndication run, but the show was an important one for ABC and Marvel, both of which are owned by Disney. Like with season 6, the final, seventh season of the series will run for 13 episodes. So far in season 6, SHIELD has averaged a 0.42 and has been one of the very few original series to air on Fridays this summer. Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, and Chloe Bennet star in the series.

What do you think of this news? Will you miss Agents of SHIELD when it leaves the airwaves next season? Let us know in the comments below!
