Pivoting Canceled by Fox

Fox has decided pivot Pivoting all the way off its schedule, canceling the low-rated freshman comedy after a single season. The show reportedly performed well on streaming platforms, but was unable to overcome its pitiful 0.24 average. That average made it one of broadcast lowest-rated series, ahead of only the already-canceled ABC drama Promised Land and its time slot replacement, Welcome to Flatch. Maggie Q, Ginnifer Goodwin and Eliza Coupe starred in the series, which wrapped its run on March 10th. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Fox Renew/Cancel #5: Final Predictions

 Predictions for 5/8/22

Below are the final renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2021-22 television season. The numbers listed in the table are the ratings that these shows have garnered in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Since the previous update, one series have been renewed by the network. As always, only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.

ee

The 9-1-1 Duo: Longtime drama '9-1-1' and spinoff series '9-1-1: Lone Star' are both certain to return for another season. The most recent episode of '9-1-1' garnered a sturdy 0.70 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic, making it the highest-rated broadcast of the evening. 'Lone Star' posted a more mild 0.51 but was still fairly competitive in its hour with powerhouses like 'NCIS' (0.55) and 'Shark Tank' (0.53). These are the only two scripted shows that could legitimately be classified as strong performers on the Fox network, and the executives would be making a massive mistake if they somehow decided to let go of this consistent, reliable pair. Status: 99% Chance of Renewal

The Resident: 'The Resident' is a clear step below the '9-1-1' dramas in the ratings department, with a performance that is just barely passable by current standards. It generally hovers around the 0.4 vicinity, sometimes slightly higher and recently just a touch lower (0.38). Cancellation would not be a complete shock here, but it's likely that Fox will want to keep a few modest players around since they are losing Thursday Night Football to Amazon this coming fall. Expect 'The Resident' to squeeze out at least one more season. Status: 70% Chance of Renewal

Call Me Kat: 'Call Me Kat' definitely struggled to make a case for renewal this season and has experienced a pretty noticeable sophomore slump. If not for the departure of 'Thursday Night Football' and the lack of hits in Fox's sitcom department, 'Kat' would most likely be at the end of its run. Despite that, the Mayim Bialik sitcom finished out its second season with an impressive finale bump, jumping all the way to a 0.36 rating for the last episode of season two. This is a good bit stronger than what 'The Simpsons' is currently posting and is the sitcom's highest rating since mid-March. Though not a lock by any means, a renewal appears more likely than not. Status: 60% Chance of Renewal

Pivoting: The last three episodes of 'Pivoting' were unable to clear the 0.2 mark in the 18-49 demographic and were all below 1 million in total viewers. If Fox wants to rebuild their comedy brand, they would be better off investing in another season of 'Call Me Kat' than a second season of a show that does not deliver from a commercial standpoint. Status: 20% Chance of Renewal

Welcome To Flatch: In terms of strength, there does not seem to be any meaningful difference between 'Welcome To Flatch' and 'Pivoting'. Though the May 5th episode actually climbed to a series high in the 18-49 demographic, that high is still a mere 0.21 rating. With only one episode above one million in total viewers and completely awful ratings, 'Flatch' is not likely at all to return. Status: 20% Chance of Renewal

Our Kind of People: This dud from the fall wrapped up its season in late January with pitiful ratings and no episode extension. Though its numbers seem a bit better now since it never had to air in the spring months, that does not mean it has much of a shot at being renewed. Status: 15% Chance of Renewal

The Big Leap:  This drama was unceremoniously canceled in early March and was a correct prediction. Status: CANCELED

The Cleaning Lady: Fox awarded 'The Cleaning Lady' with a renewal in early April. The drama was a 'Likely Renewal' since its debut and was a correct prediction for this column. Status: RENEWED

The Animated Four: 'The Simpsons', 'The Great North', 'Bob's Burgers', and 'Family Guy' were all renewed for the 2022-23 television season before fall 2021 even began. Their ratings leave much to be desired but they will not be leaving anytime soon. Status: RENEWED

What About Duncanville?: 'Duncanville' debuted with a meager 0.18 rating on the first day of May. Since it will primarily air in the summer, it will not be part of the 2021-22 predictions and instead will have its fate determined in the Summer Renew/cancel column.

Below are the latest renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2021-22 television season. As always, only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.

Welcome To Flatch: Fox's latest addition to its sitcom library debuted with a pitiful 0.20 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic and barely cleared the one-million mark in terms of total viewers. These numbers would be miserable enough on their own but it also managed to lose nearly 50% of its 'Call Me Kat' lead-in (0.36). 'Welcome To Flatch' is already the lowest-rated series on Fox and, like nearly every show to air on television, will likely drop from its premiere rating. Unless 'Flatch' magically grows an audience overnight, this comedy series will not be welcome on the Fox network by the time the fall season arrives. Status: LIKELY CANCEL

Call Me Kat: Since the previous column, sophomore comedy 'Call Me Kat' has been upgraded from "Likely Cancellation" to "Likely Renewal". Though it has definitely struggled this season, it recently shot up to a 0.36 rating on March 17th. That may not seem very solid on paper but it serves as the program's strongest 2022 performance without football help. This rating also eclipses the latest episode of every sitcom in the "Animation Domination" block, making 'Kat' the highest-rated Fox sitcom of the week. Considering that most shows crumble this late in the game, 'Kat' is beginning to look somewhat serviceable. Fox also airs reruns of the Mayim Bialik comedy every Sunday night, signaling that they are invested in making sure it gets more exposure. 'Call Me Kat' is far from a lock but a renewal seems far more likely than it did two months ago. Status: LIKELY RENEWAL

The Cleaning Lady: This Elodie Yung drama closed out its first season with an adequate 0.39 rating and retained a solid 71% of '9-1-1: Lone Star' (0.55) on finale night. 'The Cleaning Lady' was a modest success for the Fox network and even managed to outdo its premiere rating on January 24th (0.53) and January 31st (0.55) respectively. While it did tie its series low for its season closer, the Yung vehicle has likely done just enough to avoid cancellation. Status: LIKELY RENEWAL

Pivoting: 'Pivoting' ended its inaugural season with a lifeless 0.18 rating and went as low as a 0.15 during its short stint on Thursday nights. The sitcom was consistently below one million in total viewers for its final three installments and has an average that barely puts it above recently-canceled 'Big Leap'. All signs point to 'Pivoting' succumbing to an early demise, it is not likely to survive past these initial ten episodes. Status: LIKELY CANCEL

The Big Leap: Fox officially canceled 'The Big Leap' on March 4, 2022. Before this news came out, the drama had been in the "Certain Cancellation" category for quite some time, thus making it a correct prediction. Status: CANCELLED

Ratings Analysis: After taking an unsettling plunge in its second week, NBC's 'Law & Order' reboot (0.54, +0.04) rebounded a bit for episode three. 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.52, +0.04) rose by the same amount at 10 while 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.65) held steady in-between. On ABC, 'Station 19' (0.61, -0.07), 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.61, -0.02), and 'Big Sky' (0.27, -0.02) all dropped on a week-to-week basis. CBS's 'B Positive' (0.40, -0.05) shed five-hundredths for a finale that aired thirty minutes earlier than it normally does. A rerun of 'Ghosts' (0.31) and a rising 'Bull' (0.36, +0.04) came after it while 'Young Sheldon' (0.62, +0.02) and 'United States of Al' (0.48, +0.13) preceded 'Positive'. Fox made gains across the board with the 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' finale (0.36, +0.10), 'Call Me Kat' (0.25, +0.05), and the season closer of 'Pivoting' (0.18, +0.03). 'Walker' (0.11, -0.01) and 'Legacies' (0.04, -0.04) slipped on the CW, with the latter posting a new series low.

Finals Update: 'Joe Millionaire' (+0.1), 'Bull' (+0.1), 'Law & Order: SVU' (+0.1), and 'Call Me Kat' (+0.1) adjusted up. 'Legacies' (-0.1) adjusted down.

Ratings Analysis: CBS's 'United States of Al' (0.35, -0.12) crashed to a series low for a special 9:30PM episode, retaining less than 70% of its 'Ghosts' lead-in (0.52, -0.03). 'B Positive' (0.45, +0.01) took over the 8:30PM slot and picked up a hundredth in the process. Though 'Positive' appeared healthier, its retention of 'Young Sheldon' (0.60, -0.03) was barely an improvement over 'Al'. At 10, drama 'Bull' (0.32, -0.09) slipped to its lowest rating for a 2022 installment. On NBC, episode two of the 'Law & Order' revival (0.50, -0.24) plunged into middling territory after last week's robust launch. 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.65, -0.03) and 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.48, -0.04) fared much better in comparison, only falling by a few hundredths each. ABC's 'Station 19' (0.68, -0.07) and 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.63, -0.15) dealt with sizable declines while 'Big Sky' (0.29, -0.01) only shed a hundredth. Fox's 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.26, -0.04) tied its series low as 'Call Me Kat' (0.20, -0.05) and 'Pivoting' (0.15, -0.04) descended to their poorest ratings to date. 'Walker' (0.12, +0.03) and 'Legacies' (0.08, +0.01) had modest upticks on the CW.

Finals Update: 'Station 19' (+0.1), 'Law & Order' (+0.1), and 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Screen-Shot-2022-02-25-at-12-29-57-AM

Ratings Analysis: Though it fell a bit short of being the highest-rated program of the night, the 'Law & Order' revival (0.74) got off to a stellar start on NBC. That positive momentum seemed to help spinoff dramas 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.68, +0.05) and 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.52, +0.03) grow by five-hundredths and three-hundredths respectively. ABC had a phenomenal evening as 'Station 19' (0.75, +0.13) and 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.78, +0.17) soared for their first episodes since December. This was the highest 'Station' rating since its September 2021 premiere and marked a new season high for 'Grey's. In comparison, 'Big Sky' (0.30, +0.03) only managed to scrape together a few extra ticks at 10. After being off for several weeks, 'Young Sheldon' (0.63, -0.10), 'United States of Al' (0.47, -0.07), 'Ghosts' (0.55, -0.13), and 'B Positive' (0.44, -0.02) all dropped by varying degrees on CBS. At 10, canceled drama 'Bull' (0.41, +0.03) was the only show of the lineup to rise. Over on Fox, 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.30, -0.01) and 'Call Me Kat' (0.25, -0.05) declined as newbie 'Pivoting' (0.19, +0.01) rose by a single hundredth. Leading out of a rerun of 'Walker' (0.06), The CW's 'Legacies' (0.07, -0.02) shed two-hundredths.

Finals Update: 'Station 19' (+0.1), 'United States of Al' (+0.1), 'Grey's Anatomy' (+0.1), 'Ghosts' (+0.1), and 'Call Me Kat' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Ratings Analysis: Though it remained a far cry from its 2018 levels, the '2022 Winter Olympics' (1.38, +0.20) gained two-tenths on NBC and outperformed Wednesday's unsettling low. ABC's 'Jeopardy! National College Championship' (0.61, +0.09) grew by a tenth and led into low-rated encores of 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.24) and 'Big Sky' (0.15). On Fox, 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.31, +0.05) was up by five-hundredths, but sitcoms 'Call Me Kat' (0.30, -0.05) and 'Pivoting' (0.18, -0.06) crumbled. CBS had reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.44), 'United States of Al' (0.35), 'Ghosts' (0.33), 'B Positive' (0.30), and 'Bull' (0.21). The CW aired encores of 'Walker' (0.07) and 'Legacies' (0.04).

Finals Update: The '2022 Winter Olympics' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Ratings Analysis: The '2022 Winter Olympics' (2.15, +0.34) climbed to its highest rating yet and passed the 2.0 threshold for the second time, helping NBC win the night once more. The third outing of ABC's 'Jeopardy! National College Championship' (0.60, +0.06) improved from Wednesday and led into an 'NFL Honors' broadcast (0.44) that was five-hundredths short of the 2021 telecast (0.49). On Fox, 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.26, -0.06) crashed to a new low, but sitcoms 'Call Me Kat' (0.35, +0.03) and 'Pivoting' (0.24, +0.04) gained a few hundredths. CBS had reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.38), 'United States of Al' (0.27), 'Ghosts' (0.25), 'B Positive' (0.23), and 'Bull' (0.19), with each one posting a lower rating than the previous. Encores of 'Walker' (0.06) and 'Legacies' (0.04) made up the CW's lineup.

Finals Update: '2022 Winter Olympics' (+0.3), 'Call Me Kat' (+0.1), and repeats of 'Young Sheldon' (+0.1), 'United States of Al' (+0.1), and 'Ghosts' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 2/3/22: Winter Olympics Drops Two-Thirds from Opening Night of 2018, Celebrity Big Brother Collapses, Soul of a Nation Specials Bomb (Final Ratings)
AP22035116072735-0

Ratings Analysis: Though night one of NBC's '2022 Winter Olympics' coverage (1.24) more than doubled every other program that aired during the 8-11PM block, it opened leagues below where it began in 2018 (3.7). This was nearly 70% behind that rating from four years prior and demonstrates that the staying power of this towering event may be waning. Fox decided to air originals opposite the 'Olympics', with 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.32, -0.01) inching down and freshman sitcom 'Pivoting' (0.20, -0.02) slipping to a new low. Sandwiched in-between, struggling 'Call Me Kat' (0.32, +0.06) somehow rose to its highest rating for a Thursday-night episode in 2022. While a 0.32 is nothing to write home about, 'Kat' appears a tiny bit healthier than it was a few weeks ago. Airing behind reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.52) and 'Ghosts' (0.48), CBS's 'Celebrity Big Brother' (0.49, -0.29) plunged from Wednesday's return and was followed by an encore of 'Bull' (0.21). ABC got little mileage out of a pair of 'Soul of a Nation' specials (0.29/0.21) and even less out of a repeat of 'Promised Land' (0.10). The CW barely scraped by with reruns of 'Walker' (0.08) and 'Legacies' (0.06).

Screen-Shot-2022-01-28-at-12-34-11-AM

Ratings Analysis: Though it aired without the help of its 'Ghosts' lead-in, CBS's 'B Positive' (0.50/0.46) remained on-par with the week prior for an hour-long event. The 9PM episode tied its season high while the 9:30 installment was only four-hundredths below last Thursday's outing. Earlier in the evening, 'Young Sheldon' (0.73, -0.10) lost a tenth as 'United States of Al' (0.54, +0.01) gained a hundredth. A rerun of 'Bull' (0.28) capped off the night. ABC's broadcast of 'Truth & Lies: The Last Gangster' (0.49) was nearly a tenth higher than the week-ago 'Women of the Movement' finale (0.40). A rerun of 'Promised Land' (0.18) that followed was only four-hundredths lower than its Monday premiere (0.22). 'Call Me Kat' (0.26, -0.05) and 'Pivoting' (0.22, -0.04) slipped to new lows on Fox, but 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.33, +0.01) picked up a hundredth. NBC went with repeats of 'The Blacklist' (0.25), Law & Order: SVU' (0.31), and 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.27). The CW's 'Walker' (0.09, -0.05) crashed to a series low and led into a 'Legacies' encore (0.06).

Finals Update: 'B Positive' (+0.1) and 'Call Me Kat' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 1/20/22: Young Sheldon Rises to Season High, Women of the Movement Ends Down, SVU and Organized Crime Also Decline (UPDATED)
ghosts-season-1-rebecca-wisocky-hetty

Ratings Analysis: ABC miniseries 'Women of the Movement' (0.40, -0.05) and docuseries 'Let the World See' (0.31, -0.07) lost some ground for their finales, with each program dropping to its lowest rating on record. Fox's lineup remained just as dismal as the week before as 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.32, -0.03) shed three-hundreds from its previous episode. Sitcoms 'Call Me Kat' (0.31, +0.01) and 'Pivoting' (0.26, +0.03) inched up from their disastrous debuts but did not grow enough to seem meaningfully stronger. CBS got a season high out of 'Young Sheldon' (0.83, +0.10) and minor upticks from 'Ghosts' (0.68, +0.03) & 'B Positive' (0.50, +0.01). 'United States of Al' (0.53) held flat at 8:30, and recently-canceled 'Bull' (0.38, -0.04) forfeited four-hundredths at 10. NBC's 'The Blacklist' (0.41, +0.01) got back a single hundredth as 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.63, -0.04) ticked down and 'Organized Crime' (0.49, -0.06) fell to a new low. The CW's 'Walker' (0.14, +0.03) gained three-hundredths and led into a 'Legacies' rerun (0.06).

Finals Update: 'Women of the Movement' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Fox Renew/Cancel #3: ’The Cleaning Lady’ Will Stay On the Payroll

Predictions for 1/17/22

Below are the latest renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2021-22 television season. The numbers listed in the table are the ratings that these shows have garnered in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Four programs have entered the arena since the previous update. As always, only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.

The Cleaning Lady: After the rotten luck Fox had with new dramas in the fall of 2021, the 0.51 rating that 'The Cleaning Lady' posted for its series premiere served as a refreshing change of pace. Though not a massive hit by any means, this was markedly stronger than the starts of dramas 'Our Kind of People' (0.35) and 'The Big Leap' (0.29). A modest 10% dip in week two placed it at a rather serviceable 0.46, still well above even the highest ratings of the fall newbies. On average, 'Cleaning Lady' has retained a respectable 70% of its '9-1-1: Lone Star' lead-in and fell by a smaller amount than 'Lone Star' did during their second night airing together. While these mediocre ratings would place it as a tossup on a network with A and B-caliber freshman, this C-level performance looks like a godsend against Ds and Fs like 'Our Kind of People' and 'Big Leap'. Although unemployment may loom over her if ratings continue to trickle down, 'The Cleaning Lady' should be able to keep her job for another year. Status: LIKELY RENEWAL

Call Me Kat: Though the comedy's current average may seem promising, it's beginning to look like 'Call Me Kat' will have to close up shop. The sophomore sitcom actually started season two on solid footing, posting an NFL-boosted 1.22 rating that was on-par with the post-football delivery of 'The Simpsons'. If that were not encouraging enough, this rating was just 11% lower than its 2021 series debut (1.37). Things took a troubling for 'Kat' and friends when the series crumbled on Thursday night, garnering a horrific series low (0.30) and going nearly 60% behind its timeslot start from the previous year (0.68). Though there's still time for 'Kat' to change its fate, a collapse of this degree indicates that the Mayim Bialik vehicle will not be sticking around. Status: LIKELY CANCEL

Pivoting: This new sitcom will soon be 'Pivoting' to the exit as its ratings are pitiful enough that it currently sits near the bottom of the roster. Even when taking into account the fact that it lost over 50% of 'Call Me Kat' on premiere night, the 0.60 rating it debuted with was still somewhat workable. After that passable launch, it collapsed on Thursday evening and posted a pathetic 0.23 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Fox may not have much going for it in the sitcom department but they certainly will not renew the one with the lowest ratings of the pack. Status: LIKELY CANCEL

9-1-1: Lone Star: This drama began its third season with a strong 0.76 rating and then dropped to a still robust 0.65 for episode two. Although a clear step down from the 0.8-1.0 range it inhabited in season two, 'Lone Star' has proven that it can anchor an hour without the assistance of its parent series '9-1-1'. Since it remains one of the highest-rated programs on the Fox network, a renewal is all but guaranteed for this spinoff series. Status: CERTAIN RENEWAL

Ratings Analysis: Though football kept them afloat on premiere night, there was no saving Fox comedies 'Call Me Kat' (0.30, -0.92) and 'Pivoting' (0.23, -0.37) in their timeslot debuts. While a sharp decline was to be expected, the two sitcoms were down a dreadful 75% and 62% respectively from what they garnered just four days prior (1.22/0.60). In particular, 'Call Me Kat' fell behind every single rating it posted in season one. Airing before the comedy catastrophe, reality effort 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.35, -0.04) dropped by four-hundredths from its mediocre start. On CBS, sitcom anchors 'Young Sheldon' (0.73, -0.01) and 'Ghosts' (0.65, -0.05) dealt with some minor slippage, but 'United States of Al' (0.53, +0.03), 'B Positive' (0.49, +0.03), and 'Bull' (0.42, +0.04) all rose from their midseason returns. ABC miniseries 'Women of the Movement' (0.45, +0.02) gained two-hundredths in week two as docuseries 'Let the World See' (0.38, -0.02) fell by the same amount. NBC's 'The Blacklist' (0.40, -0.02) ticked down while 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.67, +0.05) and 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.55, +0.04) picked up a few hundredths each. The CW's 'Walker' (0.11, -0.04) forfeited four-hundredths and led into a 'Legacies' encore (0.05).

Finals Update: 'Law & Order: SVU' (+0.1), 'Ghosts' (+0.1), 'Joe Millionaire' (+0.1), and 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Ratings Analysis: Fox's 'Call Me Kat' (1.22) began its second season the same way as its first, airing on a Sunday night behind 'NFL Overrun' (4.61) and 'The OT' (3.05). 'Kat' was down a light 11% from its year-ago premiere (1.37), but its 'OT' lead-in was about 16% higher than it was in 2021 (2.62). While 'Kat' seemed fairly healthy on arrival, viewers quickly fled when new sitcom 'Pivoting' (0.60) debuted at 8:30. The freshman comedy lost more than 50% of the 'Kat' rating and was below every football-boosted 'Great North' episode from fall 2021. In the 9PM hour, 'Bob's Burgers' (0.50, -0.08) and 'Family Guy' (0.48, -0.07) were both down close to a tenth from their last installments. With the help of their own 'NFL Overrun' (3.36), '60 Minutes' (1.13, +0.58), 'The Equalizer' (0.68, +0.14) and 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.52, +0.05) rose by varying degrees on CBS. The boost faded away by 10PM as drama 'SWAT' (0.42) was unable to rise and could only match what it garnered a week prior. ABC had no football help in sight but that didn't stop 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (0.62, +0.11), 'Supermarket Sweep' (0.55, +0.14), and 'The Rookie' (0.40, +0.08) from surging to new season highs. Despite the impressive gains from 8-11, 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.49, -0.07) shed seven-hundredths in the 7PM timeslot. NBC's 'Chargers v. Raiders' NFL game (4.85) dipped by 3% from the week-ago 'Vikings v. Packers' match-up (5.00). At 7, 'Football Night in America' (1.70) lost five-tenths from its previous outing. 'Legends of the Hidden Temple' (0.04, -0.01) ticked down on the CW and was followed by a rerun of 'Superman & Lois' (0.02).

Finals Update: 'NFL on Fox' (+1.8), 'NFL Overrun' on CBS (+0.8), 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (+0.1), 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (+0.1), 'Supermarket Sweep' (+0.1), 'The Equalizer' (+0.1), 'NFL: Chargers v. Raiders' (+0.8), 'The OT' (+0.3), 'Call Me Kat' (+0.3), and 'Family Guy' (+0.1) adjusted up. '60 Minutes' (-0.2) adjusted down.
