"ZONE DEFENSE"

FADE IN:
INT. STARSHIP - DAVIS’ OFFICE - AFTERNOON
Davis sits at his desk, a holographic computer with various
articles on it is in front of him, as is a holographic
typewriter.
Zyla, Echo, and Tron (20s) sit in front of him, looking
eager.

DAVIS
Thank you all for meeting me today.
Zyla, Echo, this is Tron. I’m sure
you’ve seen him around the ship.

Zyla and Echo nod a hello to Tron.

ZYLA
Yeah...what’s he doing here? I
thought these were intimate
sessions. You know, private.

DAVIS
They are, you can trust Tron.

ECHO
That doesn’t answer her question.

DAVIS
I’m getting there.
(a beat)
Tron here is just like both of you.
Experiencing lapses of time,
mysterious aches...

ECHO
So why is here? With us?

DAVIS
There’s one difference between him
and the two of you.

ZYLA
Yes?

DAVIS
Do you remember how I mentioned
that there was a reason a certain
group of people were experiencing
these blackouts?

ZYLA
Yeah, but you’re a part of the
Night. So of course we took that
with a grain of salt.
DAVIS

And I don’t blame you. But Tron
here, he might make you think
differently.
(to Tron)
Tron, show them what you can do.

Davis hands Tron a diamond. Tron takes the diamond and places
it evenly in his palm. He places his other hand on the sharp
diamond and squeezes. A cracking sound. He then removes his
top hand to reveal the diamond - in pieces.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - WINTER’S CLASSROOM - AFTERNOON
Winter stands at the front of a full classroom. A holograph
of a cartoonish looking alien is floating in front of the
students.

WINTER
Next topic, conspiracy theories.

A student raises his hand.

CHANCE
What’s this weird cartoon got to do
with that?

WINTER
It’s an alien. You know, the thing
you guys were so invested in
knowing about the other day?

CHANCE
That is not an alien.

WINTER
Why of course it is.

PAX
Ms. Elara, that is not what my dad
says aliens look like.

WINTER
Aliens aren’t real, Pax.

PAX
Sure they are! He says that aliens
are everything we wouldn’t expect
from them. That they can shape
shift, that they’re evil, they want
to hurt us...

WINTER
Nonsense. I’m sure your dad was
just joking around.

CHANCE
I don’t know. Maybe he was right.

WINTER
And why do you think that?

CHANCE
You really don’t think aliens
exist? That they’re just some crazy
conspiracy theory?
WINTER

Of course. Aliens are just some
foolish bedtime story created many
years ago by the founders of Night.

PAX
But what if they were real? If none
of us believe in them, that means
we aren’t prepared...for if they do
exist.

CUT TO:
INT. STARSHIP - LOWER LEVEL SECURITY ROOM - AFTERNOON
We’re close to finally seeing the Lower Level. We’re there,
but not close. Eli and Annica stand in the outside security
room of the lower level, talking to the head of security,
Nova (50s).

ELI
Alright, Nova. Give it to me
straight.

NOVA
As you now, there have been more
and more runaways the last few
weeks. Each time, they get further
and further to the Main Deck.

ANNICA
Yes? What’s new? Why’d you sound
the alarm?

NOVA
Well, I was making my rounds this
morning, and all of the Control
Rooms, Boiler Rooms, and Power
Rooms were empty.

ELI
What are you saying? Wyatt didn’t
schedule anyone?

NOVA
That’s what I thought it was. At
first.

ANNICA
Until?

NOVA
Until two of the Rowers jumped me.
I’m lucky I had the Electric Whip
with me.

ELI
So what’s going on?

NOVA
It looks like they’re revolting. At
least some of them.

ELI
How much damage will that cause?

NOVA
Well, if you recall the power
glitches we were having last
week...

ANNICA
That was because of them?

NOVA
Looks that way.

ELI
So how many are still working?

NOVA
A few hundred. That and the
reserves should keep the ship
running for a few days.

ANNICA
But?

NOVA
But, it doesn’t appear they are
going back to work anytime soon.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - DAVIS’ OFFICE - AFTERNOON

ZYLA
What the hell was that?

DAVIS
I told you, he’s special.

ECHO
Ok, so what? He’s freaky strong.

DAVIS
Ech, nobody is strong enough to
crush the Atlas Diamond.

ECHO
That could’ve been a fake. And I
still don’t see why you have us
here.

DAVIS
I have you here because, as I have
continuously said, Tron is special.
And he’s the key to helping us
piece together what’s going on with
all of you.

ZYLA
How is he going to do that? He
doesn’t even speak.

DAVIS
He can speak. But I think you’d
only like him to do that on the
Moon Walk Deck.

ZYLA
How is he going to help us?

DAVIS
He’s going to help you. And Echo.

ECHO
Huh? How?

DAVIS
Like I said. There’s a reason
you’re experiencing what you are.
One of the possibilities is because
you have powers. Or because powers
were bestowed upon you. Or, well,
you’re not who you think you are.

ECHO
Wait a minute. This guy crushes a
toy and the next thing you’re
telling me is that we’re all some
kind of freak?

ZYLA
I’m with him on this one. Your
argument here is really spotty, at
best.

DAVIS
I didn’t think we’d need to go to
this point. Come on.

Davis gets up and presses into the air, closing down his
research holograms. Tron also stands.

ECHO
Where are we going?

DAVIS
Moon Deck. Suit up.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - WYATT’S OFFICE - AFTERNOON
Wyatt and Meridian sit in Wyatt’s office. Wyatt, stern
looking, while Meridian seems confused.

MERIDIAN
So...have you seen the new sun they
put in the Earth Room? It’s pretty
epic.

WYATT
Let’s skip the formalities. We’re
not friends. I need you and you
have to listen to me.

MERIDIAN
Aren’t you the charmer?

WYATT
If I wanted to charm you, I would.

MERIDIAN
What do you need?

WYATT
What I am about to tell you can’t
leave this room. You can’t ask any
questions and you cannot tell me
no. You do what I say. Or your
fired. Got it?

MERIDIAN
Yep.

WYATT
For reasons that are above your
paygrade, we need you to install
some new upgrades to Starship.

MERIDIAN
Okay...like?

WYATT
You’re going to have to add some
Nitrotrons to the Security Ships.

MERIDIAN
Easy enough.

WYATT
And, add a fourth wall to the Pod
Room. Can’t having anyone see what
goes on there.

MERIDIAN
I didn’t question when I had to add
the second and third.

WYATT
Finally, I want you to make sure
Captain Eli and Annica have
Molecular Destabilizers in their
rooms, in the Navigation Room, and
in the Captain’s Room. And, you
need to install a Stealth Code into
the ship’s protection gear.

MERIDIAN
Ok. Your wish is my command.

WYATT
Really? No whine, no complaint?

MERIDIAN
I’m not going to dare cross you.
You know, your threat and all.

Wyatt smiles eerily.

WINTER
Good.

CUT TO:
INT. STARSHIP - LOWER LEVEL SECURITY ROOM - EVENING

ELI
So what do they want?

NOVA
Plenty of impossible demands.

ANNICA
Any we can meet? To pacify them and
get things back in order?

NOVA
Honestly, it’d be hard. They don’t
want to back to normal.

ELI
What are you saying?

NOVA
I am not going to tell you what to
do, but it may be wise to pay a
trip to the bank.

ELI
No, that’s not happening. There’s
lines I won’t cross.

ANNICA
Then what are we going to do?

ELI
Maybe I should speak with them.

NOVA
No, that’s not a good idea. They’re
unhappy. Unstable. We don’t know
what they are capable of. I’ve
ordered the guards to shoot at
anything suspicious.

ELI
So what? I wait until the ship
stops moving forward? We have a
destination to get to.

NOVA
There is one thing. But it’s risky.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - SCHOOL HALLWAY - EVENING
A crowded hallway is filled with students as classes end for
the day. Winter stands by her door as Nix approaches her.

NIX
How’d they treat you today?

WINTER
They were fine.

NIX
Really? The Final Five didn’t give
you any trouble?

WINTER
Nah. They’re actually pretty
interesting when you get to talking
to them.

NIX
(playful)
With all their teenage hormones and
ambitions? Interesting? Did you
drink anything today?

Winter laughs and playfully punches Nix’s arm.

WINTER
Stop. You should try getting to
know them sometimes.

NIX
I don’t think the boys I train want
to have lovey dovey chats.

WINTER
And what about you?

NIX
Not really my style.

WINTER
Then I guess you’re not the type to
want to go on big romantic dates.
Are you?

NIX
Only if it’s with someone special.

WINTER
Got anyone waiting for you at home?

NIX
No, but I work with this really
awesome girl. You should meet her
sometime. Cool, beautiful, and
loves bonding with hormonal teens.

Winter laughs.

WINTER
Still on for our next date? I was
thinking we could do something
special.

NIX
Name a place and time and I’ll show
up.

Winter and Nix share a playful smile as Nix turns to go back
to his room.

WINTER
See you then.

CUT TO:

EXT. STARSHIP - MOON DECK - NIGHT
Davis, Tron, Zyla, and Echo stand outside on the Starship’s
Moon Deck. It’s like a ledge. They stand in Space Suits that
look hardly like the ones we know. The stars and the moon
light up our gang.

ZYLA
What are we here for? It’s late and
I have places to be?

ECHO
Got some more rocks for him to
crush?

DAVIS
No.

ECHO
Then what are you waiting for?

DAVIS
Before I show you what Tron can do,
I have to give you a little
disclaimer.

ZYLA
Go on.

DAVIS
What you are about to see here will
change your perspective on what you
know about our research. You cannot
repeat what you see here to anyone,
under any circumstance. What you
see here will take us to the next
level in our investigation. And you
need to know, Tron wasn’t born --
if he was -- this way. I need to
know that you will both be
committed. Committed to finding the
truth.

ECHO
Yeah. Sure.

DAVIS
I need your word.

ZYLA
You have our word. Now show us what
the fuss is about.

DAVIS
Tron, it’s okay. Show them.

Tron walks to the edge of the Moon Deck. He’s standing a foot
away from falling into the abyss and the blackness of space.
Tron plants his feet firmly and lifts his arms to lie
straight out. He looks at Davis who nods an assuring go on to
him.
He faces back forward and closes his eyes. A moment of
nothing before he pulls his arms back and then throws them
angrily forward. Out of his hands come two BRIGHT RED LASERS.
Zyla and Echo gasp.
Tron shakes his hand as hundreds of following rays shoot out
into the open space. Each in a different color-- RED, WHITE,
BLUE, YELLOW, the full rainbow.

Zyla and Echo are amazed.
Tron finishes his performance and returns to the shocked
group.
Speaking for the first time in a deep and unsettling voice...

TRON
That is what I can do.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - ELI’S ROOM - NIGHT - INTERCUTTING
Eli is sitting up in bed on the phone.

ELI
Thank you, Nova. I knew I could
count on you.

INT. STARSHIP - LOWER LEVEL SECURITY ROOM - NIGHT -
INTERCUTTING

NOVA
I’ll always have your back.

INT. STARSHIP - ELI’S ROOM - NIGHT - INTERCUTTING

ELI
Are you sure this will work?

INT. STARSHIP - LOWER LEVEL SECURITY ROOM - NIGHT -
INTERCUTTING

NOVA
Positive. And nobody will know what
you did.

INT. STARSHIP - ELI’S ROOM - NIGHT - INTERCUTTING

ELI
Do you think it was the right
choice?

INT. STARSHIP - LOWER LEVEL SECURITY ROOM - NIGHT -
INTERCUTTING

NOVA
Of course. They weren’t going to
comply. You had to give them
incentive to work. Despite how
personal and ruthless it was.

INT. STARSHIP - ELI’S ROOM - NIGHT - INTERCUTTING

ELI
Thank you, Nova.

Eli hangs up the phone. He sighs, guilt on his mind, before
turning over and going to sleep.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - HALLWAY - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
We cut to a dark and rundown hallway. A woman with a cloak
over her head with a SWORD symbol on it walks down the
hallway, quietly.
She walks to the end of the hallway. A door at the end of the
hallway is labeled “THE NIGHT”.
She passes a keycard over the door and with a buzz, it opens
allowing her in the room.
INT. STARSHIP - THE ROOM OF NIGHT - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
The woman enters the dark room and sits down at a table. Only
a man is sitting at the table, Zaiden (20s).

ZAIDEN
Anything to share? I told you to
not come back here until we knew
who. You cannot be found out.

The woman removes her cloak to reveal the face of Miranda.
She’s a member of the Night.

MIRANDA
I need your help.

INT. STARSHIP - LOWER LEVEL DIAGNOSTIC ROOM - MORNING
Picture a hospital room, but much less clean and safe
looking.
A shirtless man sits in the diagnostics chair. Next to him
are some weird looking MEDICAL EQUIPMENT and dried blood.
CLOSE ON a man’s eyes.
We slowly pan back to reveal more and more of his face. Until
we can see it’s Meridian. What is he doing here and how did
he get here?
He wakes up. He takes a moment to get his bearings straight.
And then he realizes where he is. He’s mortified.

MERIDIAN
What the hell?!

He looks down to see wires taped to his chest. He quickly
pulls them off.
He tries to get up from the chair but his arms and legs are
locked to the chair. He cannot go anywhere. He’s stuck.

MERIDIAN (CONT'D)
HELP!

His scream echoes throughout the entire level. Nobody hears
him.
Off Meridian’s scared and helpless look, we smash to black.
