Starship Season 1 Episode 1: Welcome Aboard

Written by Luke Parker

FADE IN:

EXT. STARSHIP - SPACE

Picture shots of a beautiful and breathtaking cruise ship-- but floating in the middle of space. That’s our titular ship. The year is 2995. The residents of the ship are nothing like those of our world today. Picture people dressed up in Futuristic Halloween Costumes - but everyday, all day.

INT. STARSHIP - SWIMMING POOL ROOM - NIGHT

We cut to a large room with a swimming pool in it. The room is empty. It’s late. Dim security lights give us an eerie vibe.

Maxx (18, polished) sits by the pool, drink in hand. He seems to be waiting for something. Just then, the door to the pool room opens. A figure walks in...an unknown (to us) figure.

MAXX
Didn’t think you'd show.

Maxx gets up from his chair and approaches the guest.

                         MAXX (CONT'D)
Blackmail. It’s not my style, but
it gets the job done.

The figure gives us no reply. Not much of a talker.

Maxx pulls a folder out of his back pocket.

MAXX (CONT'D)
Here’s my part of the deal. Now you got the money?

Nothing. Silence. No movement.

MAXX (CONT'D)
You didn’t bring it? ...It’d be a real shame if the whole ship was to find out what you did. What you’re all doing to them, to us.

In a split-second, the figure rips the folder out of Maxx’s hand, and with their other hand, they punch him. Hard, in the face. He falls to the ground.

MAXX (CONT'D)
What the hell was that for?

The figure approaches Maxx, slowly, but surely. Maxx tries to get up, until the figure kicks him. He’s thrown back several feet. Things are turning grimm.

MAXX (CONT'D)
(nervous)

Man, stop! Forget about the money, I won’t tell anyone. I just want you to protect Miranda when that day comes.

The figure approaches a down Maxx. He stops. For a moment it appears Maxx’s speech has won over the figure.

Until the figure gives Maxx a final blow to the head, rendering him unconscious.

With Maxx unconscious, the figure picks him up and tosses him into the pool. Maxx has been left to drown as we...

INT. CLASSROOM - MORNING - NEXT DAY

We open to a bright classroom. Winter Elara (late-20s) is standing in front of twenty tweens. A PowerPoint is playing on the screen, showing various parts and rooms of the ship, as well as of space.

WINTER
What you guys may not realize now is that you have been given a privilege to be on this ship. To be surrounded by beauty and stars all day, every day. Well that’s something pretty special.

A student raises their hand.

WINTER (CONT'D)
Eos, yes. What is it?

EOS
But why do we have to be on here? My grandma didn’t have to spend her life in the same colony, with the same few thousand people. She got to explore the world. Travel to countries, meet cute guys...

WINTER
Well, when your grandma was your age, Earth was a different place. A safe place.

EOS
And now?

WINTER
Well, now...let’s just say it’s not a world you would want to live in.

EOS
But I do!

WINTER
No, you don’t. Getting to be on the Starship is something your kids will be jealous of. The Elders have put us on a great ship. And one day, we’ll have a new world. A world of promise and hope. Scary? Yes. Unknown? Also, yes. But epic.

Off this, Captain Eli Elara (early-30s), Ship Captain and Winter’s brother, walks in. Winter is taken aback.

                         WINTER (CONT'D)
Eli! What’re you doing here? You’re not usually up for your shift for another couple hours.

ELI
Well, I had some extra time, couldn’t sleep. I thought I’d come see how my little sister’s doing with the new group.

WINTER
(to the class)

Guys, give me a minute. Work on your list of places on the ship you want to see and we’ll share in a few minutes.

WINTER (CONT'D)
(in a hushed voice, to Eli)
So what are you really doing here?

ELI
There was a breach in the lower-
level last night. We don’t think anyone
got out, but we can’t be sure.

WINTER
Oh God. What do you need me to do?

ELI
Just in case someone broke through, keep the group a little longer today. We’ll be done with the sweep soon.

WINTER
Will do. Good luck, Captain.

Eli turns to leave, but not before...

                         WINTER (CONT'D)
And hey, if you see Wyatt, tell him mom is looking for him. Something about a missing diamond.

ELI
Mom lost another diamond?

WINTER
Probably. She thinks Wyatt stole
it, but she’s not in the right
mind. Not after the leak.

ELI
Ok. I’ll be on the lookout. And
thank you.

As Eli turns to leave we

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - COMMONS - AFTERNOON

The commons. Picture a mall. Complete with stores and diners. It’s packed. As always. People walk about, stopping in various shops, diners, the whole deal.

Meridian and Davis (mid-20s) sit at a table. Davis is typing on an hologram of a computer.

DAVIS
So what can you tell me about
Christmas Eve?

MERIDIAN
That’s exactly it. I can’t.

                         DAVIS
               Care to elaborate on that?

MERIDIAN
Like I said. I was doing my usual sweep of the Digital Deck, making the year end repairs. Next thing I knew, I woke up on New Year’s Eve.

DAVIS
You got that drunk, huh?

MERIDIAN
I don’t drink. And there’s more.

DAVIS
Do tell.

MERIDIAN
I woke up on the lower-level. In
the middle of a diagnostics room.

This catches Davis’ ears.

DAVIS
Having some work done?

MERIDIAN
Nobody else was in the room. And I had the worst headache. I tried to get up onto the common area, but my keycard wouldn’t work. And you know I do not belong on that level.

DAVIS
So what happened?

MERIDIAN
Luckily, Wyatt heard my calls.

DAVIS
Did he happen to shed any light on your dilemma?

MERIDIAN
Nope. He and those two siblings of his always run around in whispered voices. Never sharing anything with anyone.

DAVIS
Then why did you call me here? This is lazy and uninteresting scoop.

MERIDIAN
Because. Ever since then, I keep
getting these flashes of memories
back.

DAVIS
Like?

MERIDIAN
I can’t put any together, but I’m
in places that I didn’t go. And I
can’t tell what I’m doing. But I
know I don’t converse with anyone
on the Shuttle Floor or the Cyber
Deck.

DAVIS
And you never have?

                         MERIDIAN
Nope. You know how that class
lives. I would remember.

Davis clicks into the air, closing his hologram computer.

DAVIS
We can work with this. If you
remember anymore, call me.

Davis hands his card to Meridian.

MERIDIAN
It’s crazy. We’ve been on this ship for years. And only now is weird stuff starting to happen.

Davis laughs.

MERIDIAN (CONT'D)
What’s funny?

DAVIS
Dude, there’s a lot of trippy stuff on this ship. You just have to open your eyes.

MERIDIAN
So, the date still on?

DAVIS
Yeah. Just after get this report
in.

                         MERIDIAN
Cool. And who do you work for
again?

DAVIS
The Night.

Off of this, Davis leaves Meridian sitting as we

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - CAPTAIN’S ROOM - EVENING

Eli is sitting in a throne like chair, in front of a big window, showing him the void the ship is travelling into. He seems pre-occupied. He is approached by Annica (mid-20s).

ANNICA
Space to Eli?

As if she’s just smacked him, Eli pops out of a fog he was in.

ELI
Oh, Annica, Hey.

ANNICA
What’s wrong?

ELI
Nothing. Nothing’s wrong.

ANNICA
Come on, Eli. I’ve been by your side every day for the last five years. I know “nothing is wrong” means something -- or everything -- is bothering you.

Eli sighs.

ELI
Do you find it a little weird that we’ve had three breaches to the lower-deck in the past month?

ANNICA
The ship wasn’t made by Gods. It’s gonna have some flaws in its mechanisms.

ELI
Yeah, but what if someone is
talking to them? Trying to work
with them?

ANNICA
The only people who have access to that level are me, you, and The Elders. None of us would be sabotaging our own livelihood, and the success of our ship.

ELI
Yeah, I guess you’re right. But what if it’s someone else? Not from the ship.

ANNICA
Oh, don’t tell me you’ve been
hobnobbing with the Night.

ELI
They have some solid theories.
Other life, the simulations, the
Solar War.

ANNICA
Yet they have no proof.

Eli stops and looks at his watch.

ELI
Oh, man. We’re late for the
anniversary speech.

As they rush out the door we

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - PARTY ROOM - NIGHT

Several highly-dresses guests stand around the room as classical music plays in the back. The room is dressed in fancy designs and decorations.

Eli is making a phone call, he is flustered and annoyed.

ELI
(to phone)
Wyatt, you’re the manager of this
ship.
We needed you at the anniversary
party five minutes ago. Call me
back or get here now.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - THE WALTZ RESTAURANT - NIGHT

Picture a fancy restaurant, the type where you come hungry and leave hungrier. Robot waiters fly around, taking orders and bringing out food. Meridian and Davis are sitting at a table. Meridian looks out of place.

MERIDIAN
I’m surprised you showed.

                         DAVIS
               Why wouldn’t I?

MERIDIAN
I don’t know. Kinda figured you just wanted to use me to get scoop.

Davis takes a sip of his wine.

DAVIS
I do.

MERIDIAN
Thanks for sparing my feelings.

DAVIS
Or-- I did.

MERIDIAN
What changed?

DAVIS
You intrigue me.

MERIDIAN
I guess I should be flattered.

CUT TO:

EXT. STARSHIP - STAR GAZING DOCK - NIGHT

Miranda (18) and Wyatt are standing on the outer deck of the ship. It’s as if they were standing in front of the Northern Lights. A beautiful sight. Miranda is holding a holographic recorder.

Wyatt pulls out his phone -- CLOSE ON PHONE: 14 missed calls from Eli. He puts it away.

WYATT
Let’s make this quick. I have an angry brother and somewhere I need to be.

MIRANDA
All I want to know is what work
you’re doing on the ship.

                         WYATT
You know, manager duties.

MIRANDA
That’s not what I mean.

WYATT
Then, please. Elaborate.

MIRANDA
Ok, for starters, the residents of this ship are so focused on their shuffleboard and their fine dining, that they forget they know nothing about the great unknown we’re traveling into.

WYATT
And you want me to...?

MIRANDA
I won’t go public about my
suspicions if you tell me
something. Anything.

WYATT
You know we’re traveling to a
greater planet. A better place to
colonize.

MIRANDA
That’s what they tell us. They say “It’ll be an easy trip”. I don’t believe them.

WYATT
So you believe in aliens? Just
‘cause we’re in space?

                         MIRANDA
I believe in monsters. And I
believe we could be in danger.
We have no clue what is past the
planets. What lies beyond.

WYATT
That’s for a reason.

Wyatt turns to go inside the ship.

WYATT (CONT'D)
I gotta go, babe.

MIRANDA
We’ll talk more tonight.

WYATT
We’ll see about that.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - PARTY ROOM - NIGHT

The crowd is growing anxious.

WINTER
Eli, we need to start. If Wyatt
shows, he shows. If he doesn’t,
then he doesn’t.

ELI
Crap. You’re right. Let’s get this over with.

Eli and Winter approach the holographic podium. Eli claps to get the room to hush.

ELI (CONT'D)
We are so glad you all could be here with us tonight. To celebrate this momentous occasion. It seems like it was just yesterday that our ancestors were given this blessing in disguise. This new and exciting life.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - THE WALTZ RESTAURANT - NIGHT

MERIDIAN
So, icebreaker question. What can
you tell me about these so called
“strange happenings” that you’ve
been investigating?

DAVIS
The Night doesn’t like me to
tell...

MERIDIAN
Unless?

DAVIS
You could make it worth my wild...

With a playful eye to each other, we...

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - PARTY ROOM - NIGHT

WINTER
A life with a purpose. With
freedom. Eternal Life. Beautiful
and captivating worlds.

Wyatt appears behind Winter and Eli, in a flash, almost as if he teleported there. He steps up to the podium, sharing a look with his siblings. Miranda is gathering in the crowd now.

WYATT
And now, it’s been at least a
century. A century of wonder, of
hope. And as we continue this
journey into the unknown, we are
thankful.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - MERIDIAN’S QUARTERS - NIGHT

Meridian and Davis are in his room, filled with boxes that it appears they were looking through.

MERIDIAN
So, you’ve seen what I have to
offer. Now where’s my reward?

DAVIS
I can’t tell you much. But what I can tell you is this. There are others like you. Others who cannot remember long periods of time. There are suspicions about what goes on in The Elders’ quarters.

MERIDIAN
Nothing exciting?

DAVIS
Disappearances, talks of
preservation in the Pod Room...but
that’s really all I can tell you
for now.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - PARTY ROOM - NIGHT

ELI
And while it may be scary and we
may not know what is coming, or
what we travel into, one thing is
for sure.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - MERIDIAN’S QUARTERS - NIGHT

MERIDIAN
What about the people like me?

DAVIS
Much worse. Some don’t even remember their name. Why? We don’t know. But I’m going to find out.

CUT TO:

INT. STARSHIP - PARTY ROOM - NIGHT

ELI
This colony, will go into that together. Whatever it is, we face it together. Just like we have and just like we will continue to do so.

WINTER
Happy Anniversary, Starship.

The crowd cheers and applauds the sibling trio.

Upon this, a loud noise overhead in the ceilings is heard.
The crowd stops cheering with this loud noise.

And Bam! The ceiling falls down on top of the audience and the siblings.

Chaos and screams ensue as we then set on the body of MAXX.

This sets off a horrific array of screams and terror and off of the shocked audience, and sibling trio, we

SMASH TO BLACK.
